Chapter Five, How it Works
An acquaintance of mine told me of an incident he was involved in while in treatment the last time. The particular counselor he was assigned really believed in working the AA program and working it as it is written. After he had tired it his way time after time, this counselor finally collar him and said, “I want to ask you a questions. You know in “How it Works” in the Big Book where it says, “Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path. Those who do not recover are people who cannot or will not completely give themselves to this simple program,” Which are you?”
My friend asked him, “Huh? What do you mean?”
The counselor replied, “Which kind of person are you? The “cannot” or the “will not”?
I just love “How It Works.” And it has been my experience that on almost every occasion that I find rough going in this program it has been because I turned into one of those “Will Not” folks.
I guess it's a good thing it is "progress" and not "perfection".
