Hi, I am 36 and recently quit after 20 years of heavy drinking. I am very concerned with long term memory problems is this common? I mean I can hardly remember anything of the past 20 years..Due to lack of encoding memories to long term when drinking? (Was drinking 2 bottles of wine per night, more on wkds). If so, can the memories ever come back or are they gone forever? Also does it improve with absistence? Very worried about this. Thanks

I would suggest talking with your doctor about your memory loss. There could be many reasons for it.

I personal accept that the black out evenings are gone forever. In a black out, the brain goes in some type of witness protection mode.

Hi, cheers. Yeh he just said memory is bound to be hazy from when I was drinking. Google searches seem to back up what Thepatman said. Such a shame and I didn't even consider permanent memory loss at the time. Oh well live in the present and all that.

Absolutely. I can't do anything about the memories I lost from the drink but it sure is fun to make new ones that you want to remember.

Hi, thanks for the encouragement. I saw the doc as said before..I guess whatever damage done is done. Depressing but I just have to suck it up and move on.

The simplest explanation regarding memory is that they go into short-term memory and are then transferred to long-term memory, where we may dredge them up years from now. The problem with blackouts is that the memories were never created in the first place; therefore they're just................................gone.

I was talking to a friend of mine earlier today about some things that happened 50-55 years ago. I have no problem remembering 50-55 years ago; it's 50-55 minutes ago where I have a problem.......ahhhhh, getting older is so much fun..............
