HI kids, I am a regular over on friends and family of substance abusers, joining this thread because I have quit smoking. I am on day 4!!!!! My strategy is cold turkey, but I did make the mistake of trying an e-cigarette and it really feels like a cigarette and it triggered me. Going full cold turkey, Hubby is on patch. Cheer us on!
Hi to all ex-smokers.......
Question - I have been tobacco free for around 3 weeks. I really don't have cravings - not doing patch or gum program, just quit.
Around 10-12 days it was rough....then it subsided. Now though - last couple days - feeling out of sorts/depressed or just blue maybe.
I can't seem to shake it.
Did ya'll go thru some depression or just blah in the first month or so??
Don't know if it's tobacco or other issues.....
Thanks for any replies

Day 39 here.
LBrain, I am a fisher too, and wonder - what do I do with my other hand now?! Then again....no more burnt mono filament as I'm reeling in the big one
Flynbuy - i skipped out on the blues part cause I took Welbutrin to quit. I do recall having that trouble when I quit cold turkey once. I can suggest amping up your anti-craving devices when the downers hit. Exercise, call a friend, read, etc. Good luck - It'll pass the more those toxins purge!
ILMSJJ - GOOD JOB to you and hubby! Not easy, smoking slips happen - it doesn't have to mean relapse Keep up the good fight!

Flynbuy - Day 207 here. If you want to get over the depression you talk about, write a list of things that are better since you stopped. My list includes, I smell nice, I am not out of breath when I climb the stairs, I have saved a lot of money and I am not being anti-social and dirty by throwing horrible cigarette ends on the floor.
You might like to think what you can add to your own personal list and I reckon that will courter balance any negative stuff going on for you.

Flynbuy, I think it's fairly common to feel some depression when you're quitting. My doctor told me that cigarettes were anti-depressants, albeit, very dangerous ones. I think trying to distract yourself is a good idea and it will pass eventually.
I quit cold turkey too. It was tough and sometimes still is, but I feel pretty motivated to not be a smoker anymore. I ate junk food while I was at the beginning, like Twinkies and Ho Hos. (Gross-I know) and gained some weight.
Wellbutrin didn't work for me, in fact, it made me want to smoke more because it kind of sped me up a little. Everyone is different, do what you need to do to take care of yourself.
You're doing Great!!!! Good luck.

Flyn Hun I had depression too. Exactly as you describe and at that same time too. I tried Wellbutrin also, but it made me smoke more! I'm at 62 days now and it's beginning to lift. But still some days are worse than others. I have noticed that writing a gratitude list helps...as does reminding myself that I now have the potential to live a much healthier and longer life.
Congrats to all of you quitting the nicotine!

Ilovemysonjj, goin cold turkey with cigarettes is I think the best way. They are powerfully addicting, legal, readily available every where. I went cold turkey, goin on 3 years without. Rootin for everyone.
Jumping in to say I'm on day 26 without cigarettes. It's not been as bad this time but there is so much else going on the withdrawal didn't get as much attention as I normally give it. Plus using one lozenge a day has helped the cravings.
wow, this thread is picking up some steam...
Day 61 here.
welcome Ilovemyson, cold turkey is what I did.
Fly - around 30 days is when depression really kicked in for me... I actually called and made appointment with doctor over it... it lasted about a week strong then slowly disappeared I suppose.
Now I'm just a lazy procrastinator - but improving.
welcome whackybunny, I know you're getting all geared up for easter, but try to post every day.
congrats on your pending 3 yrs michael.
