I went from being afraid to say anything to anyone and being silent almost all of the time, to treating everyone like they are my friend. The response to the guy offering you whiskey reminds me of that. I will describe some weakness of mine to a stranger.
The thing is, I love people that do that. I also love people who are self-deprecating. So, it's hard for me to see it as a problem. When it is someone at work, then it is a problem because I depend on work and need to be conforment to the culture of the work place.
There are people in workplaces who engage in fake nice behavior all the time and are alarmed if you don't do that and especially if you express a genuine thought in front of them. I have a hard time doing that and also consider it unethical.
But, I guess this is more of failing to read social cues.
