I did it--with your support.
Thank you, everyone, for sharing your experiences and knowledge and tips. With your help, I got my STBXAH (no DUIs, no loss of jobs, etc.) to commit to 60 days of sobriety monitoring when he has custody of our children. He was adamantly opposed, claimed I was controlling him and always changing the terms of our agreement, etc., but the co-parenting mediator, and my unflinching determination, along with his desire to stay out of court, persuaded him to budge.
I was repeating my affirmation over and over on the way to the session: "I'm smart, I'm powerful, and I'm protecting my kids," but at some point I edited it to the phrase some of you on here use: "You got this!" And you know what? I got this! So happy tonight.

Way to go, sauerkraut!!!! Whoot!!!! Proud momma moment for you. Happiness is within reach for you and your kids. Oh and yeah, the oldest line in the book for a spouse of an alcoholic-you're controlling. Quack! Interesting that that one statement shows how little they care for the safety of their kids. Idiots.
Does he have them for extended periods of time? Does he only have to show 60 days of sobriety and then he is off the hook for showing sobriety ever again?
I would be sure to have the plan IRON CLAD bc he will, if he is anything like my xAH, find ANY loophole possible
It is awesome that he's motivated to stay out of court... Mine on the other hand seems to enjoy court and so no mediation solution ever worked...
So glad for you and your kids! You're a rock star!
