Without knowing the person it is impossible to say. I will share what I know about me. Before I became an alcoholic I did have less than ideal traits however, I was able to control them pretty well usually. After the alcoholic drinking kicked in all bets were off. I was an unstable nutjob.
While I think most, if not all, addicts are self centered - or more accurately addiction centered and that results in very self centered behavior.
I don't think all self centered people become addicts and I don't think all addicts started out self centered.

Yeah, and I think a lot depends, too, on when the alcoholism developed. People tend to "freeze" in their emotional development when they become alcoholics/addicts. So someone who becomes an alcoholic in his/her teens (a very self-centered age) tend to stay there. And alcoholism makes EVERYONE more self-centered than they were before, so it certainly aggravates whatever tendencies there already were.
