There is a way to help. It's fairly easy and takes little time.

While it's no news that ....At its core, addiction to alcohol or other drugs is a chronic, relapsing condition, much like high blood pressure, asthma, or diabetes. Treatment for addiction can be as effective as treatments for other chronic conditions.
Yet rampant discrimination against people with addictions restricts their access to education, housing, employment, financial assistance, and health care, which often discourages people from seeking treatment....it is something that has to constantly be brought to the attention of state, government and local officials..lest they forget.

Efforts to fight discrimination could help millions of people with substance use problems get effective treatment, instead of blocking their recovery with unequal and inadequate insurance policies, rules against medication use, and unfair employment regulations. Acting against discrimination now will help many people immediately, and will pave the way for emerging approaches to help many more.

Here are the Key issues and what we can do to help:

Alcohol Taxes
Increasing alcohol prices through taxes, particularly on beer, is an effective strategy for reducing underage drinking.

Alcohol Marketing
Limiting alcohol advertising and promotional activities that target young people will protect America's youth.

Lifesaving Laws
Laws that change the context in which young people drink help prevent deaths and injuries.

Equal Coverage for Treatment
Health insurance should cover alcohol and drug problems like any other medical condition.

Treatment Medications
Support the development and use of effective medications for addiction treatment and recovery.

Screening & Brief Intervention (SBI)
Make screening and brief intervention a routine part of every primary care and emergency room visit.
Screenings and brief interventions (SBI) address risky alcohol/Drug use long before it leads to health, financial, social, employment or family problems. Research shows that a brief, non-judgmental intervention by a health care professional can have a positive, long term impact on risky alcohol/drug use.

Improve Treatment Quality
Give higher payments to providers who get better results.

Treatment, not Incarceration
Require treatment and supervised aftercare instead of incarceration for non-violent alcohol and drug offenders.

End Discrimination
Repeal policies that prevent ex-offenders from returning to full participation in society.

Support Community Coalitions
Helping communities sustain their communitywide strategies can help reduce alcohol and drug problems at the local level.

Repeal the law that does not recognize that repetative Drug and Alcohol use and/or Overdoses as being an endangerment to oneself or others, and therefore 'A' can not be commited to treatment when everything else has failed.
