I don't think I've ever "ruined" anyones life, but I sure as hell put people in some awful positions. I know time and time again I screwed my parents over, stole from them and lied to them. It had a major impact on my parents, they were distraught at who I had become. My boyfriend at the time was a non addict, after constantly watching me do drugs and putting so much effort into helping me... he finally gave into my peer pressure and started using. He became addicted and from what I know, still is on them years later. I've caused legal problems for some people, emotional problems, probably even inflicted some physical pain on others.

Your garden variety drug addict is more likely to try to take advantage of someone than a non-addict is. There's also a reasonable chance that the non-addict is a codependent. Then, boom goes the dynamite.
