Clonidine .01 ok for addicts in recovery?
Hi everyone,
I am 11 years sober trying to sponsor someone who is chronic with alocholism, cocaine addiction, and has severe childhood trauma. She has been prescribed Clonidine .01 by a doctor for days when she is really upset. The two times i have spent with her while she has taken it, i felt like i was talking to someone who was under the influence. I fully support her taking Prozac, Trazadone, Topomax, but clonidine?? isn't that a benzo?
Any help will be appreciated. i have survived having bi-polar disorder by taking meds (more in the beginning) but i don't take ativan, or clonopin, nor would i want to. My sober friend tells me i am not a doctor and she needs to express that she is ready to give it up. She is coming up on 60 days clean with everything else.
Thanks,

Hi TABSMT
If your sponsee is worried on her own behalf, I'd recommend she speak to her doctor.
If you're worried as a sponsor for your own reasons it's up to you to decide whether you can work with her or not I guess.
I've seen some folks on these boards in trouble from clonidine use (particularly withdrawal), but others have benefited greatly from using it as prescribed.
It is not a benzo, btw, and should not be confused with Klonopin.
