Denatl Phobia

Good Afternoon all,
The last couple days, I just realized I have PTSD.
Either that, or a good sized phobia.

I am having 2 teeth pulled tomorrow, and bone grafts placed, so I can get 2 implants.
I have not slept good for 5 days now, just thinking about it. I'm a wreck.

The Oral surgeon gave me a sleeping pill to take one hour beofre tomorrows surgery, she USE to give 3. One, the night before, one, an hour before, and the last one you bring with you in case you need it. She only gives one now, for one hour before, says the law won't let her give three pills anymore?
I am sure I'll be fine, but good grief this anxiety is awful.

When I analyze it, I realize it goes back to being young with NO dental care, and when I had a toothache, the tooth was pullled under ETHER, which made me vomit for hours after. Then when I arrived home, my mother would generally be serving steak for dinner, no soup or anything. Oblivious to the fact, I couldn't eat.
She had no maternal genes in her body. But, I've faced that a long time ago, so that's really not an issue for now, I think...LOL

Okay thanks, I feel a bit better now, just writing it out.
I'll feel MUCH better at 1 p.m. tomorrow when it's over and I'm on the couch!

Good luck with the dental thing, moose.

Dentists dont bother me, just the drilling and that big ole needle.

Geez.

Moose,

Oh boy, I´ve had dental phobia since I was a kid. I´m right there with you.

I got mine after a dentist pulled seven teeth out and the anathesia had worn off. I was just a kid and it was awful.

Good luck and remember to breathe deeply. It will go well!

Love and light,

Moose...

Do you have an Ipod or Walkman? I like listening to really loud music while in the dental chair. Drowns out the drill. Good luck

I was thinking about taking my headset radio...but I've never done that before, and I though maybe I'd miss it if she tells me to move my head or something...

It just seems like such a weenie thing to be afraid of, but seriously I'd rather have abdominal surgery.

Don´t knock the power of this phobia, Moose. It can be really strong.

Thankfully, I have really healthy teeth and go only every three year for a dental check. There has been nothing wrong for ten years now.

I had an honest discussion with my dentist and he knows I have dental phobia, so he knows not to do anything unless my mouth is completely numb.

Be clear and make him aware of your fear. It worked for me. The ipod is a great idea. Go for it, and know I´ll be thinking of you.

In France, people can have mild anasthesia at the dentist. Can you have that in the States?

Love and light,

They have a choice of Nitrous Oxide you brethe thru your nose, but my Oral Surgeon doesn't have that...(drat) I've had it before and it sure makes the ordeal a bit easier.

No, no MILD anesthesia, you could have an I.V. sedation, but it costs quite a bit, and at the time, I don't have dental insurance.

I take a sleeping pill one hour before the surgery, so I'm hoping I sleep through the majority of it.

Generally, I don't remember it afterwards,....it's just the before that gets me!

I don't think fear of dentistry is necessarily a "phobia," I think it's normal to be anxious before dental work. When I was getting my wisdom teeth pulled I just told the oral surgeon straight up that I had an anxiety disorder and that just being in his office was putting me on the verge of a panic attack and he told me that a lot of his patients tell him the same thing and assured me that he understood how I was feeling. That in itself made me feel a lot better. So my recommendation would be to just let him know ahead of time, if you haven't already, exactly how you're feeling so he can make this the least traumatic he can.

I had insurance at the time so they used the I.V. sedation and it was outstanding. When I woke up I felt like I was on top of the world cause I was completely baked. But if you don't have access to that I think that just letting the staff there know how apprehensive you are should be really helpful.

Let us know how it turns out.

Oh heavens, this isn't my FIRST dental procedure.

I already have about 4 implants in my mouth, and I've had alot of dental extractions.
It's just I kind of have this sort of mouth that if anythings going to go wrong, it does.
And I'm allergic to normal novacaine, so I use a short acting anesthetic....

It's just unexplainable, I get so upset. I don't have such a problem with the general dentist, it's the Oral Surgeon that REALLY bothers me.

It's going to be fine, it's going to be fine, it's going to be fine.......

It was fine.
In fact, I surprised myself, I was very calm..

I'm kind of hurting now, though...

But, I'll take hurting over that anxiety anyday.

Congratulation, Moose!

It´s over!

:day4

And I don´t have to go for the next three years. Went for a check-up recently and my teeth were impeccable.

Love and light,

ooooooooomooselips, how are you feeling after your procedure? i know how scary this stuff is......i had four impacted wisdom teeth removed and was terrified........made sure the dentisit put me under 100%

my poor dad just had to go for FIVE root canals before they could finally get to that one tiny little nerve, can you IMAGINE? he had to go to a specialist 90 minutes from home, and of course, my mother didn't go with him, but that's between them!!!!

so anyway mooselips, relax and recover. you'll be up & about in no time!

Moose,
I'm sorry I missed this whole thing....

I know exactly how you feel though. As a kid, my dentist didn't "believe" in novacaine.
I had two teeth pulled because they rotted out of my mouth. He couldn't drill deep enough without hitting my roots... :
The man was a sadist....

Anyway, my dentist today knows how scared I am. And I've got teeth that have or need work in every single tooth. *sigh*
I spend a lot of anxious time at the dentist, deep breathing and practicing progressive relaxation. LOL!
And I take a xanax before I go!

How you doing now. I'm sure by now you're feeling much better. Let us know, ok? Again, I wish I could have been here for you, and I hope all is well.

How's the smoking going?

Shalom!

OH MY GOSH. You have no idea. I am having MAJOR anxiety over denstist. I had a panic attack in the dentist chair and forced a dentist to move away from my face as I was in deep panic. He told me to leave his office and come back when I grew up. I was 25.
I am now almost 50 and I finally went back to a dentist due to a severe toothache that has come and gone since OCT. I found one who understand panic and anxiety he was very kind and gental and after doing a fancy panaramic x-ray, informed me that 4 wisdom teeth plus a molar ( the one causeing all the pain ) will all need to be removed and he wanted me to go to an oral surgan and he knew just the one to send me too.
My surgery is scheduled for Feb 22.
I will take one valum the night before and they will give me one an hour before my surgery and then they will put me OUT . I will be totally under and will wake up with 5 less teeth in my mouth.

my tooth hurts about every 3rd day right now. so far I am able to deal with the pain just using 800mg of motrin.
feb 22 is so close yet so far away.
so far only 2 panic attacks.
