In foranother sober weekend!

Thanks Mags, I definitely prefer flight to fight. The thing that took me too long to learn is that willpower alone is not enough, you need more than that to avoid falling prey to cravings.

Welcome to Weekenders AthensDawgs! Congratulations on a week.

Congratulations on your 3rd weekend Erratic.

I’m in for another sober weekend

There is a third leg to that instinctive response. Fight, Flight, Freeze.

I tend to freeze in the face of challenges/danger. Like a rabbit.

MAYBE the big bad wolf just won't see me.

I feel like that's behind things like procrastination, avoidance, indecision, and denial. It's also what causes me to hold my breath way too often.

Don't move. Hold absolutely still until the danger passes.

A lot of my alcoholism was in response to trauma and PTSD. Alcohol was good for un-sticking or blunting that fear response. Of course I took it way too far and became afraid of nothing, and got myself into even more traumatic experiences as a result.

I did not mean to kill the thread!?!...My walk was so beautiful - absolutely perfect weather. I'll be back here in a couple months whining about the cold and wet, so there's that.

You didn't kill it, Bim. :) It's just a lull.

It helps if you know which way to run too. There is no scary music like in horror films to let you know you're running the wrong way.

People criticise me for not knowing the difference between left and right but one day the boot will be on the other foot.

I'll get my coat....

Got some sad news this evening. A guy that was in treatment only a few weeks after me in 2019 overdosed a few days ago. I knew he was struggling
with a while and was back in treatment again. I didn't know him that well, only to see and say hello really. A waste of a life, only about 34 with 2 young kids.

SoberLeigh 09-02-2021 02:08 PM

That’s very tragic, Reid. Dreadful. Prayers for his family and may he RIP.

Reid, I hope the winding up of your mother‘s estate is going fine.

I wouldn't say it's winding up, Captain. If anything it's still in the early stages and probably won't be resolved this year at any rate.
My accountant is putting forward to the Revenue Department that I shouldn't have any tax to pay, there's lots of different loopholes and stipulations
to meet so I'm not going to worry currently.

Hi everyone :wavey:

Friday morning here :)

Congratulations on a week Athensdawg, really well done :)

And your 3rd weekend is great Erratic!

Hooray on the car Marty, you’re going to love it! What a fabulous reward for your continuing sobriety :)

Bim, that kitty and dolphin is the cutest gif ❤️

That’s so sad Reid about the young man. My Mum’s estate took about a year to wind up, with probate extending it longer than otherwise. I hope things go relatively smoothly for you.

I have a challenging weekend ahead. An old friend arrived yesterday to stay for a few days. I haven’t seen her in more than 20 years. I’m not judging her at all, because I could so easily have been her, but the next few days might prove to be rather tricky for me to navigate. A standard day for her consists of drinking and smoking and getting trashed. I will need to stick close to SR this weekend :grouphug:

Stay close to SR Willow

I'm in for another sober weekend! :) Tomorrow I'm taking my brother out for dinner to celebrate his birthday last Monday. :) He gets to choose where we go and is leaning towards the Asian bistro downtown. That's cool with me cause they have very good food. :)

Dee74 09-02-2021 04:38 PM

I'm sorry Reid.

Cityboy 09-02-2021 05:47 PM

Willow, maybe you can plant a positive seed for your friend.

CaptainHaddock 09-02-2021 06:47 PM

Morning Weekenders. I’ve been sleeping very well lately, but this morning somehow find myself awake since 3am.

Reid, It sounds to me that your accountant will successfully negotiate the matter on terms that are favorable for you. Over here the term ˋwinding up´ is sometimes used to describe the whole estate administration process, from start to finish.

Willow, I know this is easy for me to say, but if your friend is going to get wasted (and I hope she decides not to) it doesn‘t mean that you are forced to join in. As you said, stay close and focus on how proud you will be if you stick to your boundaries and perhaps you‘ll even have some fun. I like meeting old friends and in my experience they normally respect if they see some things have changed.

Welcome Athensdawg! Hi Everyone. I am in for another sober weekend. Mags thanks for the starter. On good days I consider myself a warrior that has been successful. I need to pat myself on the back more often. Though I know there will be more battles the fights in early sobriety were very tough. Confidence that I can handle sobriety is building everyday.

After 8 and 1/2 months sober things are getting easier. But today after an emotional upset related to family issues I really was craving a big glass of wine. But I knew it would not solve my problems. It would just numb me temporarily. I made it through. I am also weaning myself off of Gabapentin that the doctor and psychiatrist prescribed to help with my recovery and anxiety. I have been taking a relatively low dose since February. Hopefully, I will not suffer too much going off of it. I am really wanting to be off it to see what my baseline is without prescription meds.

I hope everyone has a good weekend!

SoberLeigh 09-02-2021 07:50 PM

Stay close, Willow. I hope that your friend can be respectful of your sobriety. In any event, I am confident that you can navigate this challenge successfully and that you will feel very proud for doing so.
