Damn this disease

Just got a call from a very close friend in AA. 5.75 years sober and he got a second DUI. Classic SLIP sobriety loses its priority. Thank god he reached out and will doing what he needs to to stay sober. Without going into all the gory details but this will screw up his life on so many levels.

My heart is breaking. He let other things take precedence over his sobriety, then a tragedy happened, then a drink.

Folks none of us are immune. At least he is still alive

AnvilheadII 06-04-2016 03:12 PM

the Beast never sleeps.

sorry for your friend.

and God bless

Well.... sounds like he at least came out alive and hopefully didn't kill anyone.

So may this unfortunate turn of events become a milestone that anchors his sobriety firmly from now on.

So awful & sad, MIRecovery. I did the same thing after 3 yrs. of sobriety, but I didn't get back on track for a very long time. I'm glad your friend intends to - and that he confided in you.

Hang in there. I know how shaken we can get when those close to us relapse.

Best wishes for your friend. Let him know even an atheist or two is praying for him.

Thanks atheist prayers count double

MIRecovery 06-04-2016 03:56 PM

What is so scary is I thought he had it. I thought he was secure in his sobriety. I sponsored him in the beginning , I've known him for almost six years.

How is this possible

Soberpotamus 06-04-2016 03:58 PM

I'm sorry, MIR. :(

I hope he gets right back on track. Glad he's alive.

I'm so sorry MI. I don't think any of us are immuned. I've always thought that if I can make it 5 years my chances of not relapsing go up. But only if my commitment doesn't wane. I'm glad he's back in the saddle and didn't hurt anyone.

Zebra1275 06-04-2016 04:41 PM

I'm sorry to hear that. That's why we need to be vigilant "one day at a time."

SoberLife90 06-04-2016 04:44 PM

Sorry ro hear about your friend, but you posting it definitely helps me!

GroundhogDay 06-04-2016 06:06 PM

So sorry to hear about your friend, and so glad he has you.

It's never dormant and it never dies. It just gets quiet. But it's always there.

Because "alcohol is a subtle foe". :-(

ZenLifter 06-04-2016 08:57 PM

Sorry to hear that :(. But let your friend know that his slip encourages all of us to stay vigilant in our recovery.

Prayers from me too...I'm agnostic, so....if atheist prayers are double, are mine like one and a half? 😜

JK130 06-04-2016 09:22 PM

So sad. And scary. For those of you who are talking about staying vigilant, can you share more about what you mean? And what would vigilance look like? Thanks so very much!

I'm sorry about your friends situation .

Your quote is so true

Steely 06-04-2016 10:42 PM

I relapsed after 5 years. It is very patient.

Now, nearly 6 months up, and have never felt so strong in my sobriety.
