Damn this disease
 

Just got a call from a very close friend in AA. 5.75 years sober and he got a second DUI. Classic SLIP sobriety loses its priority. Thank god he reached out and will doing what he needs to to stay sober. Without going into all the gory details but this will screw up his life on so many levels.

My heart is breaking. He let other things take precedence over his sobriety, then a tragedy happened, then a drink.

Folks none of us are immune. At least he is still alive

Well.... sounds like he at least came out alive and hopefully didn't kill anyone.

So may this unfortunate turn of events become a milestone that anchors his sobriety firmly from now on.

So awful & sad, MIRecovery. I did the same thing after 3 yrs. of sobriety, but I didn't get back on track for a very long time. I'm glad your friend intends to - and that he confided in you.

Hang in there. I know how shaken we can get when those close to us relapse.

What is so scary is I thought he had it. I thought he was secure in his sobriety. I sponsored him in the beginning , I've known him for almost six years.

I'm so sorry MI. I don't think any of us are immuned. I've always thought that if I can make it 5 years my chances of not relapsing go up. But only if my commitment doesn't wane. I'm glad he's back in the saddle and didn't hurt anyone.

I'm sorry to hear that. That's why we need to be vigilant "one day at a time."

It's never dormant and it never dies. It just gets quiet. But it's always there.

Sorry to hear that :(. But let your friend know that his slip encourages all of us to stay vigilant in our recovery.
