Jjimmylover, it took me a little time to learn how to be myself and be comfortable that way.

I drank for decades before during and after social situations because I felt inferior, less than, and ashamed of my 'introvertedness'.

Those kinds of things don't disappear over night, but they do get better with practice, I think.

Also, it took me nearly as long to break the association that the rest of the world has fun via drinking. I no longer see that as true.

The social circle I'm in now is largely non drinkers or very occasional moderate drinkers who'll often leave drinks unfinished ( I still find that mind boggling :))

Maybe it's my age group now but the drinking thing doesn't seem to come up nearly as much as it did in my 20s and 40s when it seemed ubiquitous.

I have a great social life now - as much as I want anyway - and much better than any other time in my life and much much better than what it was as a drinker.

I've accepted I'm quiet and shy and not a great social animal outside of these few friend groups but thats ok.

Better than trying to force me to be something I'm not through drinking.

It took time effort and patience - I'm sure you'll get there Jjimmylover:)

Thanks Dee!

WiscSober and JimmyJ. Nice to have you post here. I guess most of us on this thread are still working on that "forever sobriety", so your situations are familiar. I just wanted to offer some understanding and my support.

WiscSober, welcome back to the light. JimmyJ, you made the right choice checking in to SR. I hope tomorrow brings a wonderful day to you both.

JimmyJ - RIP Robert Hunter. He was a great songwriter.

Dang I didn't know that MITA - another part of my youth is gone.
Great lyricist.

JJ what Dee said! I too am very introverted and used alcohol as a social lubricant. I now know I can still enjoy myself in social situations without a drink, though I do tend to avoid situations that I know are going to turn into binge sessions.

Good to see you Wiscsober, you've come to a great place for support.

Thanks for the new thread Dee! :)

MITA sounds like life is pretty sweet for you just now.

Have a Happy Hump day everyone!

Thanks for the new thread Dee! :)

Toots I see you are keeping the good work in the One Year Under Club! Bravo!:c011:

Kudos to Purps who promoted the Undie group all over SR in the past months! :You_Rock_

Haven't been here in a while

I have been away from ST for about 2years. I had some really hard situations to come up. I relapse for while following the death of my Mother 15 months ago. I am better now and needing support. Happy to be here.

Purps is being very modest - but she is awesome and did a great job promoting this thread!

I'm happy it's Friday, that's for sure. I was posting in our March 2016 thread how I've come to view the One Day At A Time thing a little differently, and maybe better now. I used to think it was really for when I was having tough or bad days, but I've come to realize it's just as useful when things are going well - kind of a way to keep an even keel. One person equated it to a kind of mindfulness exercise, which I like - and Purps is always big on "mindful crap". Haha.

I hope everyone is having a good day :)

Toots - I obviously jinxed your golf game by saying I hope it passed without event! I hope the chancer has now moved on.

Mags - glad you enjoyed Downton. Maggie Smith is in a class of her own, is she not?

Been unusually busy by my standards so I haven't had much chance to post here and when I do, what do I find? All these new - or at least new to me - people. How lovely is that. Hi Denise and Jimmy and Wiscsober. Glad you are here.

Denise - I too am sorry for your loss. I'm glad that you're feeling a bit better now and deciding to join this thread can only be a good idea.

Jimmy - I can't add to Dee's (and other posters) words of wisdom and support but I'm glad you decided to post here. I can offer solidarity, however, and since I'm nowhere near as far ahead as you in terms of my sober time, hats off to you also for your achievement.

My week has been busy but not with anything very fascinating! Although I did force myself to vary my exercise routine if I can give it such a lofty title. Normally I just walk a lot but this week I went swimming for the first time in ages and also went a water workout. To my surprise they did make me feel better so I might have to make myself keep going.

Friday night in the UK so I wish everyone an enjoyable weekend.

tootsl1 09-27-2019 10:14 PM

That's good Rose, and at the exercise class you might meet new people who will only ever know the sober you - which is quite a nice thing. I'm playing again today, and 'chancer' will be there I'm saying nothing - I'll see what if anything, he says!

MITA sounds like you are getting the hang of the 'mindful crap' :lmao

Purps, seriously, I don't come on here long enough each day to hunt newcomers down the way I used to, so I'm very happy to have you as my 'search and rescue' friend! :)

Mags1 09-28-2019 02:32 AM

Hi Denise, welcome back!

ManInTheArena 09-28-2019 07:30 AM

Hello Denise, and welcome!

Toots, thanks for saying that. Some days I have the mindful crap working, sometimes I feel like I'm still just holding on and some days I get lucky and the universe intervenes.

Today is a good day, though. :)

tootsl1 10-01-2019 10:22 PM

Well the weeks are cranking past, it's October already! How is everyone doing?

Mags1 10-02-2019 12:30 AM

Time is flying by toots!

All ok here, it’s a sunny day and I’m sober. :)

I hope everyone is keeping well.

Things are good here. It's funny, I was having a little AV episode today - I still get them in that 5pm - 7pm time range - and happened across this post from yesterday

https://www.soberrecovery.com/forums...ml#post7278969

I think this falls into the category of "the universe intervening" :)

Have a great night everyone!!
