Songs for Recovery

What songs do you guys find helpful when you're in a bit of a slump over your qualifier? I've been hoping to create a playlist to help me through the tough times when my AH and I are struggling. Thanks!

The Funeral - Band of Horses

I'm not sure the above is a song to get you out of a slump, but it spoke a lot to me about my experience.

"I'm coming up only to hold you under
And coming up only to show you're wrong
And to know you is hard; we wonder...
To know you all wrong; we warn."

It made me think about my role as a codependent. Trying to control the addict and show them how wrong they are...that knowing them is hard. Ironically, when I fell in love with the song (even before I knew the words) I decided to find it on YouTube just to listen. I landed upon the video which happened to depict an alcoholic of all things:

I can't watch without crying

What's Up - 4 Non Blondes
Sinnerman - Nina Simone
Bulletproof - Radiohead
Not the Doctor - Alanis Morissette
Hurt - (version by Johnny Cash)
Moonshadow - Cat Stevens
Blue Black - Heather Nova
The Message - Grandmaster Flash
Joyful Girl - Ani DiFranco
Play Dead - Bjork
A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall - Bob Dylan
Oysters - Tori Amos
She Will Be Loved - Maroon 5
Luka - Suzanne Vega
Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk - Rufus Wainwright

Actually, this is a very depressing list, and it probably dates me.

Oh, dandy, I KNEW it would be something like that from you! ALL that Staple Singers stuff is so good.

Here's a thread from a while ago on this topic: http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...s-3-songs.html

and another more recent one: http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...-cry-baby.html

And let me add that, on the day I filed for divorce, I left the courthouse and got in my car to drive home. Needing to stop the noise in my head, I flipped on the radio just in time to hear "Won't Get Fooled Again" from The Who. Rock on, Roger, Pete, Keith and John!

Maybe I'm just old, but what about Gloria Gaynor I Will Survive? That's classic.

I also love the irony in Elton John's I Want Love\

And I happen to be an old-fashioned musical theatre geek, so I also have to go with It's A Fine Life from Oliver!

Finally, I sent this Eric Idle YouTube to my son who just lost his job last week. It just cheered me up, but then again, I was raised Catholic.

Note that all of the songs except for I Shall Survive are included for their irony and their cautionary tales about how our minds can delude us into thinking all's well when it actually isn't.

Thanks to all who posted here--taking some time this AM to go through what people have posted and listen, b/c virtually all of it is stuff I'm not familiar with. I really like much of it and don't know that I would have found it on my own, so I appreciate all of you sharing!

Wanted to add that I bumped into a post in another area of the forum where the OP mentioned a band (metal) called Dream Theater and a series of songs called the "Twelve Step Suite." This is from the A's perspective--apparently their drummer, Mike Portnoy, was having serious issues and the suite is about his experiences w/AA and recovery.

Lyrics here if you're interested: DREAM THEATER TWELVE-STEP SUITE LYRICS

And music here, if you dare--I listened a little but I am NOT a metalhead and didn't get far:

I just posted this in my own thread. Kesha's Praying is where I want to be and really affects me right now. Crying as I listen to it.

This list is all over the place...
  • The Bottom Line by Big Audio Dynamite
  • Big Sky by Kate Bush
  • Pick Yourself Up - Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields (Performed by various artists - but I love watching Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire perform it in "Swing Time")
  • Spring Street - Dar Williams (especially good for breakups)
  • F### You - Cee Lo Green (when I need to get angry and I need to laugh)

If you're into punk rock, Brand New just released a new album called Science Fiction and it gives me all the feels.

Oh my, this is a favorite topic for me. I have too many favorites & I think I tend to prefer heavier rock than most other members on this board (although I am developing a taste for some mainstream pop). Here are fantastic past threads:
