These are great! What do the letters TED stand for or what is their significance? Thanks, Kari |
Oh YES! I LOVE Ted talks! Soooo much good information out there that just isn't main stream... This is a recent one I found and it really resonated with me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66cY...ature=youtu.be |

I love TED Talks. I think one of the first ones I found was a TEDWomen music - the Ahn Sisters playing "Oblivion" by Astor Piazzolla. It's by far and away one of my favorite songs and their version is beautiful. The other piece they perform ("Skylife" by David Balakrishnan) is beautiful, too. Brene Brown's TED talks are basically amazing. I'm going to pick up one of her books tomorrow. I want what she's selling. |
Thank you firesprite! I was watching this while chopping onions so I'm a mess. Yeah, onions . . .thats it |
I also love to watch TED talks and do it often. Two of my favorites that may be interesting in the context of this board: Susan Cain, who wrote a great book about how to be in peace with being a more introverted person than many others around us, and how to take advantage of this trait. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0KYU2j0TM4 One of my favorites, doctor and writer Sherwin Nuland, and his journey with depression, recovery from it, and how his life was transformed by the experience. He also wrote a few books that I love and learned from a lot. Sadly, he just passed away a few days ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEZrAGdZ1i8 I also watch a lot of science-oriented talks and other nerdy stuff. And agree Brene Brown is great. |
I've been sharing a bunch of these with friends & family lately too. I'm another huge Brene Brown fan. Her website also has great stuff - posters, cards, etc that you can download. I recently shared her Leadership Manifesto with my boss because it really fits with her business approach. I have her Parenting Manifesto & Engaged Feedback Checklist in the kitchen so I read them All. The. Time. Engaged Feedback is not something that accounts for those dealing with active addiction, but I find it helps me to keep my side of the street clean in recovery because it's full of "I" statements. It's a great tool for all kinds of relationships: I know I’m ready to give feedback when: •I’m ready to sit next to you rather than across from you; •I’m willing to put the problem in front of us rather than between us (or sliding it toward you); •I’m ready to listen, ask questions and accept that I may not fully understand the issue; •I want to acknowledge what you do well instead of picking apart your mistakes; •I recognize your strengths and how you can use them to address your challenges; •I can hold you accountable without shaming or blaming you; •I’m willing to own my part; •I can genuinely thank you for your efforts rather than criticize you for your failings; •I can talk about how resolving these challenges will lead to growth and opportunity; •I can model the vulnerability and openness that I can expect from you. |
I love me some Ted talks! |
I really, really love what Brene Brown has to say about courage. It's really inspiring and has really put a new meaning on what it means to have integrity and what it means to really love someone (making yourself truly vulnerable to be rejected). Also, it was like she completely zinged me when I heard her talking about perfectionism as a 200lb shield. Ouch but oh so accurate. |
Watched this TEDMED one last night & then started it over & made RAH watch it because he is absolutely horrible about getting good sleep. Lately he's been getting better & finding that the more he gets, the more he needs. (Well, duh, after years of insufficient sleep, his body is slurping up all this extra restorative time.) We talk about sleep being such an important part of recovery, especially early recovery. This was fascinating about how sleep is critical for overall brain health: TEDMED - Talk Details - One more reason to get a good night?s sleep |

New stuff - too good not to share! Well, this one was from a few years ago but it's new to me: Watch "How To Stop Screwing Yourself Over | Mel Robbins | TEDxSF" Video at TEDxTalks If you're looking to make changes in your life, her direct approach may strike a chord for you. Not so much recovery related as it is intriguing, this one had me in tears halfway through & seriously impressed by the end: Monica Lewinsky: The price of shame | Talk Video | TED.com |
I watch TED talks too and really enjoy them :) The TED iPad app is great, btw. |
Thank you so much FireSprite |
Glad to help SW! You inspired me to log in & watch a few newer ones. These were worth adding to this growing list: I knew this info about medical testing/general healthcare never taking women's biological differences into account overall but the way it relates to being overmedicated was a new piece I hadn't considered: https://www.ted.com/talks/alyson_mcg...ects_for_women This helped me finally find my Label: Multipotentialite. LOVE IT! https://www.ted.com/talks/emilie_wap...e_true_calling |
