Anybody else watch TED talks?

Browse Talks | TED.com

I found them on Netflix too. I'm hooked. :herewego

With topics that cover everything from technology to health, I've found so many that I am interested in. They average between 10-20 mins so it's easy to squeeze them in during lunch breaks, before bed, etc. I've even gotten DD interested in some of them. ("Brain Magic" was excellent!)

Online you can filter them by categories & I find that many of those under the "Inspiring" heading fit in nicely with my Recovery. Just thought I'd share!

Here's a good one that I just watched the other day, and I was actually was thinking at the time what great messages she had for codependents and any others trapped in being afraid to live their own lives. So thanks for the opportunity to post it now.

Has anyone read Anita Moorjani's book, Dying to be Me? It's so good, and so inspirational.

I had never heard of her before, but I will definitely check out the book after watching this video. What a beautiful, strong message she brings with her story, thank you so much for sharing!

FS-Love TED talks :) Watched several on my Delta plane ride to California the other say, for a work trip I am on. They were free as part of the seat back entertainment. I have incorporated several into classes I teach.

I fantasize about writing my own TED talk-when I have free time I think about what my topic would be on and what key points I would want to cover. I seriously would like to "write" my TED talk, even though I am not important enough to get an audience for it (yet?), ha, ha. Maybe that would be a fun thread to start, just for kicks...What would YOUR TED talk be about?

If your daughter likes brain magic, do you ever watch the TV show Brain Games? My kids LOVE that show! We used to DVR it-I hope new episodes will be forthcoming. I think it is on the NatGeo or Discovery channel?

Oh, my gosh! My favorite! Brené Brown: The power of vulnerability | Talk Video | TED.com

Just watched this one on domestic violence and abuse - why women stay: https://www.ted.com/talks/leslie_mor...ve?language=en

TED talks are a favorite pass time of mine.

CodeJob 11-14-2014 03:56 AM

Definitely! I found Brene Brown through her TEd talk posted above.

I also found this one totally worth the time!

Pamela Meyer: How to spot a liar | Talk Video | TED.com

FireSprite 11-14-2014 06:37 AM

Brene is one of my favorites too. We have her WholeHearted Parenting Manifesto on our kitchen cabinet. She has the best explanation of empathy that I've ever heard. :)

These are ALL great! I liked this one a lot too:

These are ALL really great, I finally caught up & watched every one that has been linked here. Every time I think "this one's my favorite!" the next one is just as good.

Thank you all for sharing!

Live 11-20-2014 08:45 AM

I love them too

hopeful4 11-20-2014 09:29 AM

At the risk of sounding stupid here, are these the same things I hear as a radio show on National Public Radio? I cannot open the links (work block), so I am just wondering. I know I love those!

FireSprite 11-20-2014 11:10 AM

IDK Hopeful, I've never listened to them there, but it wouldn't surprise me if they are the same.

My boss actually introduced me to them, but they watch more of the tech/science-related stuff while I prefer the inspirational.

I still haven't read the book, but my BFF's mom was diagnosed with advanced cancer at Christmas & sharing this video with her brought her so much hope & peace. THANK YOU!

NYCDoglvr 02-25-2015 12:52 PM

Yup, on NPR, Netflix and YouTube.

KariSue 02-26-2015 05:46 PM

These are great!

What do the letters TED stand for or what is their significance?

Thanks, Kari

LemonGirl 02-26-2015 09:00 PM

Oh YES! I LOVE Ted talks! Soooo much good information out there that just isn't main stream... This is a recent one I found and it really resonated with me:

TED = Technology, Entertainment & Design

I love TED Talks. I think one of the first ones I found was a TEDWomen music - the Ahn Sisters playing "Oblivion" by Astor Piazzolla. It's by far and away one of my favorite songs and their version is beautiful. The other piece they perform ("Skylife" by David Balakrishnan) is beautiful, too.

Brene Brown's TED talks are basically amazing. I'm going to pick up one of her books tomorrow. I want what she's selling.

Duckygirl1 03-12-2015 07:13 AM

Thank you firesprite! I was watching this while chopping onions so I'm a mess. Yeah, onions . . .thats it

Aellyce 03-12-2015 07:28 AM

I also love to watch TED talks and do it often. Two of my favorites that may be interesting in the context of this board:

Susan Cain, who wrote a great book about how to be in peace with being a more introverted person than many others around us, and how to take advantage of this trait.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0KYU2j0TM4

One of my favorites, doctor and writer Sherwin Nuland, and his journey with depression, recovery from it, and how his life was transformed by the experience. He also wrote a few books that I love and learned from a lot. Sadly, he just passed away a few days ago.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEZrAGdZ1i8

I also watch a lot of science-oriented talks and other nerdy stuff.

And agree Brene Brown is great.

FireSprite 03-12-2015 07:56 AM

I've been sharing a bunch of these with friends & family lately too.

I'm another huge Brene Brown fan. Her website also has great stuff - posters, cards, etc that you can download.

I recently shared her Leadership Manifesto with my boss because it really fits with her business approach. I have her Parenting Manifesto & Engaged Feedback Checklist in the kitchen so I read them All. The. Time.

Engaged Feedback is not something that accounts for those dealing with active addiction, but I find it helps me to keep my side of the street clean in recovery because it's full of "I" statements. It's a great tool for all kinds of relationships:

I know I’m ready to give feedback when:

•I’m ready to sit next to you rather than across from you;
•I’m willing to put the problem in front of us rather than between us (or sliding it toward you);
•I’m ready to listen, ask questions and accept that I may not fully understand the issue;
•I want to acknowledge what you do well instead of picking apart your mistakes;
•I recognize your strengths and how you can use them to address your challenges;
•I can hold you accountable without shaming or blaming you;
•I’m willing to own my part;
•I can genuinely thank you for your efforts rather than criticize you for your failings;
•I can talk about how resolving these challenges will lead to growth and opportunity;
•I can model the vulnerability and openness that I can expect from you.

I love me some Ted talks!

Stung 03-12-2015 04:58 PM

I really, really love what Brene Brown has to say about courage. It's really inspiring and has really put a new meaning on what it means to have integrity and what it means to really love someone (making yourself truly vulnerable to be rejected). Also, it was like she completely zinged me when I heard her talking about perfectionism as a 200lb shield. Ouch but oh so accurate.
