Our A's say very predictable and unthoughtful things. They can criticize others but they often have a severe lack of introspection. Thus they say the things we have posted. I notice it all sounds the same. They are all saying the same thing: "I am too weak and sick to deal with me, so I will bring you down."

I dont know about you all, but I am not going to let my alcoholic mother keepy my self esteem and self worth down. Her dumb phrases make me laugh, yes I admit they hurt but I know what they are really about now.

"I only started drinking again because my back hurt so bad. When I got back from *, I had some of my *'s MSContin and took one. It didn't really help, so I had the idea that I could have a beer and get a combined effect."

I may not have the quote exactly right, but that's what my A said a few days ago about the start of her relapse 6 years ago. And then there was

"Why do you always have to talk about money problems and recovery problems? Isn't there anything positive you can say?"

but that one was probably as correct as it was projective :sweat

mmmmm one of my favorites that broke my back was....

"there is no f***** way a woman will ever get an apology from a man in this house... aint f***** happening... this is a man's mans house" just after yelling at my daughter for something trivial.

it was also the last time i set foot in his house.

this was also a gem... "drinking is a flaw in charactor.. so what.. you have a lot of those too"

I'm new to this but, unfortunately, have quite a few already:

"I work hard all day, I DESEVE to have a couple of shots"

(loud and angry) "I haven't had a drink in 2 days - SEE, I don't have an addiction!"

"Smoking pot is safer than smoking cigarettes"

"I drink so I can live with you"

"Why are you so weak?"

(said while slobbering, groping, and sloppy drunk) "No will ever love you like I do, why don't you want me?"

"The only problem I have is you telling me I have a problem"

"I could be doing a lot things a lot worse than having a few drinks"

"I'm not your problem, your .... (fill in the blank here with anything from work, family, friends, grief, health, etc, etc) is your problem"

"Pot makes my asthma better"

"If a man works hard all day (in front of a computer and socializing around town) then he should be able to come home and have a drink"

"I put a roof over your head (not true), take out the trash (sometimes), make sure we have food, etc, etc - don't judge what I do" And then it's an hour or two of him judging everything about me.

"If you love me you'll just accept me as I am"

"You're the only one who thinks I have a problem" (I'm the only who has TOLD him he has a problem)

(while digging through the loose change bin) "If you didn't spend money on groceries I wouldn't have to be going through the change (to buy alcohol)"

"Why aren't you any fun?"

"I remember things just fine. YOU are the one with the bad memory"

"I wish we could live in a state that sells alcohol every day of the week all night long at the 7-11 like they do in Maryland" (after visiting my best friend who lives there and he was astonded they don't have blue laws)

"I must be a saint to live with you"

All that and doesn't think he has a problem. :(

Somewhere in our archives is a quack-ease dictionary... what they say vs what it means. Pretty funny stuff if someone can resurrect it!

He still in his first year sober but this is still happening , "She just a friend." or "I was just helping her out." I don't hear this too, too much anymore now that I've been keeping my paycheck in it's own checking account.

You know..one of the first things I read when I first became a member here is the thread about QUACK QUACK. I took that right to heart and the first time SonnyBoy was going off on one of his tangents because I wouldn't give him some money...let him drive my Jeep (drunk)...whatever...I looked at his beautiful face and watched his lips moving...and only heard QUACK QUACK QUACK....I just about busted a gut laughing so hard...Oh my..you shoulda seen the look on his face when I not only didn't give in...but I started laughing at him.
Well, needless to say...I have always kept that memory very close to my heart.

Here's some things from my A wife. Remember she's mostly drunk when she says these things.
1) Ah, your lifes sooo perrrfec.
2) You need ta eggggsersize and git your butt back.
3) Your the reezzzon I drank.
4) Is he spennndin the night here? (pointing at our son sitting on the couch)

Here's a recent one.... A little background-- there are times I like to have a beer at night.. I buy my own.A six pack will last almost 2 weeks... I HATE it when my A is boozing over the neighbors and they run out of beer, because he comes home, takes mine, and goes back.. Then I will go to get one and there will be NONE!!!
Anyway, this past weekend he went over there at 9am , after being elsewhere Fri nite until 7am... Stayed there until 4am Monday.. ,Then Monday nite he went to WWF with the King and Queen of the Party PalaceMonday nite I go to my hidden stash, and 2 are gone. I put a note in DO NOT TOUCH!!!!!
He gets home about 2 am. Shortly after I wake up to go to the bathroom..

His line-- "Nice note,and here I brought you some" (they'll be heisted soon)

Oh, and I forgot- "I didn;t get you a ticket for WWF because you don;t like wrestling"(neither does he!!!!)

And, when I mentioned that he always just goes out, never asks me " Well, you never want to go out, next just say you want to go" (Yeahm, he tells me as he's walking out the door!!!) I may just take him up on that-tell him to wait while I take a shower,get ready, etc.. Make him find a babysitter... he he he.. probably won't tho.

"I'm not drunk" -as he stumbling over his own feet and can't open his eyes

"I'm just going for a walk, I'll be right back" - yeah, in 2 days

"You drink, why can't I?"

"I'll get the money back somehow, even if I have to go rob a bank"

(From his favorite bar of course, where one beer is actually served in a huge glass and called a schooner, and equals just about 3)

We used to have fun together . . .
(he used to be able to get me to drink with him!)

If you were nicer/calmer/more loving/more accepting, I would come home . . .

I know these phrases hurt and tickle at the same time but I honestly believe that looking at these phrases can be very helpful to each of us going through our programs and reflecting on the past and the behaviors of the A's in our lives. Looking at all of the repies has certainly helped me to see the behavior patterns of my mom were a part of her illness. These phrases are one of the symptoms of being an alcoholic.

Sobriety doesn't quiet the quacking either.
Some good ones to expect in sobriety:

Alanon turns you against me.

The correct way to work the program is......( at least 30 minutes telling me how I work the program is wrong)

I quit drinking. What more do you want?

Thank God the alanon program helps us whether the alcoholic is drinking or not.

And my personal fave after I began going to Al Anon:

OOOOH. Are you going to a meeting again where you can all sit around and talk about ME?

It was almost beyond his comprehension that I (as well as others in the room ) :sons might actually have someone or something else to talk about besides HIM.
