You should try a conga. Lots of different sounds can be made and you don't need sticks. Fingers, palms, and hands can often out do sticks rythmically. There's also something called a Cajun drum. Lot's of cheep ones out there but this company caught my attention. I'm thinking of biting the bullet and spending some cash.
