It seems that alcohol is the main culprit in my erratic sleep patterns. I know alcohol disrupts sleep but even with no alcohol in my system, my sleep suffered. That is until I have been completely abstinent from alcohol for at least a month. That's how long it takes my brain to adjust to the absence of alcohol and the adaptive effects alcohol forced upon it. It feels great to naturally fall asleep by midnight and wake at 8am.
