Because the meetings are all held at churches and the countless references to god in the 12 steps.
They're held in churches because they have the most affordable meeting space. Groups are self-supporting through their own contributions and pay rent. The 12 Steps are a spiritual program, not religious. I'm anti-religion as well and wouldn't be a 12 Step program if they were based on religion.
