Depression took me by surprise in early recovery. I guess I didn't read closely enough here at SR because I didn't expect it, but I got hit several times by it. My theory is that all the alcohol numbed my emotions for years and I had to deal with lots of deferred emotion/guilt as I was slowly "coming back to life."
