I did this once. Had been holed up in a hotel room for about ten days, drinking a liter or so of vodka per day. Didn't have my glasses, had blinked my contacts out, hadn't showered in a two days, and even though I still had money for booze, I decided to go the aftershave route instead of walking to the store a mile away.
The next day, I was in the acute psychiatric ward for the first time. It would be one of three trips there, the longest being a 49 day stretch as a guest of the State of Wyoming.
