Usually varacies are a sign of portal hypertension, which is a form of cirrhosis.

My brother-in-law just got out of the hospital with similar facts (i.e. he has seldom drunk much in his entire life).
He is severly diabetic and overweight.
I know someone else who is a lifelong non-drinker and she recently had a successful liver transplant.
