Before you read my response, know that I am an alcoholic and am not just "harping" on someone who wants a couple drinks... (thank you for understanding!)
I ask because I took my husband to the ER back in June because he was throwing up blood. He survived that day, but was on life support for three weeks before he woke up. The doctor told me the day of the emergency that he banded four varices in my husband's esophagus. My husband checked himself out of the hospital 48 hours after waking up from his coma. He stayed sober for about two months, announced he was not an alcoholic and is drinking again. He does not drink in front of me. However, I know he is drinking when he goes out of town and I suspect he sips on something when he's home. I have not found any proof yet, but he did tell his sister (in confidence) that he "has a glass of wine, on occasion, with dinner". By the way, that is what he told the ER doctors too, which is B.S. I have filed for a legal separation and he's moving out of town soon.
He never went to his 90 day follow up appointment so "we" have NO idea where he stands with his liver disease. From all of his symptoms that I know and what I can physically see in him, he has to have cirrhosis...and everything points to him being dead in the near future. However, he is functioning and getting around ok. He is just getting on with his life. I feel he's going to die, but then I wonder if I am being overly paranoid and he will just go on his merry way and be just fine.
Thoughts?? Does anyone know how the other person looked before they eventually died? Did they seem like they would be ok? Am I making sense?

We can't diagnose your husband here. It does sound as if seeing his doctor would be in order though, especially if he has skipped scheduled appointments. Are you seeking help for him or with your drinking?
My cousin did.
They put a stint in his liver to stop it because they found he had cirrhosis.
He never was a drinker.
After putting in the stint,he had to drink lactolose every day to keep ammonia levels in his bloodstream down. lactolose is a violent laxative.
Usually varacies are a sign of portal hypertension, which is a form of cirrhosis.

My step father who was a alcoholic suffered from esophageal varices and he too was in a coma for about 3 weeks and needed several blood transfusions. He also was diagnosed with chirrosis of the liver and had to drink lactulose, and take other medications to eliminate wastes and balance ammonia. He too ignored the doctors medical advice to stop drinking, even though he was told it would kill him. I never questioned why he wouldnt stop, or didn't want too. probably because at the time, I was submerged in my own alcoholism. He was okay for the first year, but honestly never the same since he got sick. He wasn't as physically strong, and depending on his alcohol intake would become completely disoriented where he didn't know where he was, or make sense from the ammonia in his blood and his liver not being able to process the alcohol. As time went on he became more physically weak, began to retain a lot of fluid in is belly, feet and ankles. the jaundice was extremely visible somedays in his face, and whites of his eyes. he also began to feel cold all the time, had strange almost wart looking bumps on his arms and hands and into his 3rd year after his diagnosis, would constantly and randomly fall asleep, and complain about pain in his legs and belly due to all the water retention. I unfortunately wasn't in any shape, or frame of mind due to my serious drinking habit during the time when he told my mother to call in hospice. and even begged my mother to have me come stay with him. From what I was told he was immediately given medication to prevent serious withdrawl from the alcohol, and morphine as well to help with the pain he was experiencing. he never communicated again after the first 24hrs. And he passed a little under 72hrs since hospice came to the house. There isn't a day that I don't think of him or feel him with me. After well over 15 years of drinking and endless attempts to get clean and hospital stays, 6 months after he passed, I got sober. It has been 2 years since he passed away, and theres no doubt in my heart/ mind, hes part of the reason I turned my life around. I am a true believer in miracles, and that god does have a plan for us all.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. And please keep in mind im just sharing his story, and that everyones make up and body is different. I personally from my severe drinking habit, was told on several different occasions when I was hospitalized that my liver levels were so high to the point that docs/specialists were sure I had done un- reversable damage. now with a year and a half clean my liver and kidney functions are all normal.

He is severly diabetic and overweight.
I know someone else who is a lifelong non-drinker and she recently had a successful liver transplant.
