I have suffered from anxiety and debilitating panic attacks most of my adult life, one of the key reasons I became an alcoholic. I have been fortunate to find an addiction psychiatrist that has worked closely with me on finding non-benzo treatment alternatives. They include gabapentin (anxiety/mood stabilization/anti-craving), clonidine (anxiety/ADD) and baclofen (anti-craving), along with naltrexone (anti-craving), hydroxyzine (acute panic attacks) and ativan (doomsday scenario panic attack) as needed. I get very few ativan, so even if I were tempted to abuse them, I would just be out before they were able to do any damage. It was bad enough being an alcoholic. Thank goodness I never went down the benzo rabbit hole.
