TL, I feel the best thing you can do to be more approachable at work is to be more patient and to really listen to what the person is saying, and to consider before responding? (Apologies if you do all that already!) I am a touchy feely huggy person so I am all smiles and arm touches and compliments. If I'm giving negative criticism I sandwich it between two positives, then try to remember to later ask the person how they are now dealing with their situation. Not knowing the specifics of your post it is not easy to give more specific advise ( if indeed you even wanted it. - tell me to belt up any time you feel like it!)
