have tried, unsuccesfully, to control the drinking. We

do understand exactly where you're coming from.
There is a saying that I like a great deal that I kind of forgot about for a while until someone posted it again recently: Let go or be dragged. Trying to control anything about your friend has gotten you dragged, and it hasn't been real good for you. Letting go
has to be better, right?
