I've always used that mask, too, and felt hurt when others couldn't see behind it. I think that when we learn to put on that mask to survive we sometimes forget we're even using it. It becomes second, or first, nature.
I agree with trying to reach out to someone you trust, just a little. It is hard to be vulnerable but when you risk it you often find people were there all along just waiting to be asked.
