I know sometimes all you can do is your best, but the cats should ideally be checked daily. I watch my neighbor's kitty when she travels and one time I went to feed him (he's indoors) and could not find him anywhere. He had tried to curl up in her bed and had accidently gotten into the comforter cover and gotten trapped. As he struggled to get out he twisted the material around him. He'd been there for a number of hours when I found him and had defectated all over himself and was in a terrible state. I doubt he would have survived 2 days like that.
