Incredible to really begin to fathom the very dark place alcoholism can take a person. Your sponsor must have been in a great deal of pain. He's got a good friend in you Dan. Even if he never has the chance to understand this fact. It's a very sad story you have been involved with here Dan. Unfortunatly, it sounds like it may have an even sadder ending. This experience will no doubt leave a lasting mark on your life.
