To answer your questions this is what it says in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, p84.

"And we have ceased fighting anything or anyone - even alcohol. For by this time sanity will have returned. We will seldom be interested in liquor. If tempted, we recoil from it as from a hot flame. We react sanely and normally, and we will find that this has happened automatically. We will see that our new attitude toward liquor has been given us without any thought or effort on our part. It just comes! That is the miracle of it. We are not fighting it, neither are we avoiding temptation. We feel as though we had been placed in a position of neutrality - safe and protected. We have not even sworn off. Instead, the problem has been removed. It does not exist for us. We are neither cocky nor are we aftraid. That is our experience. This is how we react so long as we keep in fit spiritual condition."

These promises of the cravings and obsession for alcohol being removed are fulfilled when you work the 12 Steps of AA.

As has been said here, AA is free, so you have nothing to lose. You won't have to feel shame there for what you have done while drunk. People will understand and will probably share similar stories.

Will-power doesn't last long so please get to a meeting - today if possible and tell someone there you need help. You do not have to do this alone.

As to the physical withdrawal symptoms, it might be wise to talk to your doctor or pyschiatrist about these. If the body is physically dependant on alcohol, going through withdrawal without medication can be dangerous.

And post plenty here on SR - that's also good for your recovery
