I was also
strongly encouraged to attend either NA or AA meetings when I was in treatment. At first, they were not my cup of tea (or coffee as it were) but I can say that I give much of the credit for my almost 7 years of sobriety to the people I met at those meetings. When I got out of treatment, I had no idea how to stay sober and be happy for the long term. They did and they were willing to tell me how they did it. So, for me, the 12 step solution was my solution after all.
Still, 12 step programs are not for everybody, so if you go another route, go that other route to the full. There is absolutely no reason to try to do this thing all by yourself. It's not like you get bonus points for doing it without support.
