Welcome to SR Silencer, the key for me to stop and stay stopped was the willingness to do anything to stay stopped. I had to become willing to go to AA and work the AA program to stay stopped. There are other programs besides AA, work which ever one works for you, just be willing to do what ever it takes.
As already said, the best place to start is right now, just do not pick up a drink and do what ever it takes to keep you from pickiing up a drink. Working the program of AA removed the urge/obsession to drink from me. I have not battled the beast in almost 2 years, I could honestly care less if I ever drank again.
