First of all, if your kid wants to go on a big trip with just the two of you- that's a pretty good sign! They probably wouldn't want to go if they didn't like you a whole lot. He probably also knows more about your problem than you do- kids are so perceptive like that (I'm the kid of an alcoholic, so I have some experience in this arena).
