I'm so sorry he chose to do this and that you are faced with so much right now. As long as I live I don't think I will ever understand why addicts do the things they do. I know about the disease. I know about the 12-steps. I know he tries. But even "knowing" all that, I still don't understand how they can hurt the ones they say they love.
