Soar like an Eagle - Weekenders 21 - 24 January 2022

Soar like an Eagle

:welcome

I read this passage that DaisyBelle put on SR a year ago. (Thank you Daisy :) )

The only bird that dares to peck an eagle is the crow. He sits on his back and bites his neck. The eagle does not respond, nor fight with the crow; it does not spend time or energy on the crow. It just opens its wings and begins to rise higher in the heavens. The higher the flight, the harder it is for the crow to breathe and then the crow falls due to lack of oxygen.

Learn from the eagle and don't fight the crows. Just keep ascending. They might be along for the ride but they'll fall off.

I related it to the niggly voice I used to get, relentlessly at me to have a drink. I realised the more often I ignored it the weaker it became. Just like the crows on the eagle’s backs.

If this is your first weekend sober, or many, come join us for support and chat...as we know the weekends can sometimes be a struggle. (We’re here all week too!) :)

End of Day 67. Every day I feel I have more energy. The nagging worry if I will be able to take even a one week break from alcohol is gone. Strength to everyone here. Good night from Seattle!

calmself 01-19-2022 09:46 PM

First one here!!! Great post, thanks Mags.

Mags1 01-19-2022 09:48 PM

Congratulations on shotgun calmself!

calmself 01-19-2022 09:58 PM

Thanks, Mags.

They say it takes scientifically 66 days to break an old habit. On Day 67, the brain assumes the new habit as the new normal. Hopefully it works for me !!

Mags1 01-19-2022 09:59 PM

That’s good news calmself. I know you’ll soar like the eagle. Congratulations on day 67 :c011:

Kaily 01-19-2022 10:48 PM

Great opening Mags, thanks.

No soaring for me today but I have woken up sore. My eyelids are all puffy and swollen. Yesterday I decided to put on some eye makeup, not something I do anymore but I wanted a boost from looking haggered. It did make me feel good. Today I look like I have been in a fight.

Ooh, that must be sore Kaily. Some cucumber slices on your eyelids may help or a cool damp cloth.

Reid82 01-20-2022 04:03 AM

Thanks Mags, I'm in.

RaggedyMan 01-20-2022 04:28 AM

Morning, I'm in for another weekend...

Robbie64 01-20-2022 05:54 AM

Thanks Mags, I'm IN for a sober weekend.

MLD51 01-20-2022 06:16 AM

I'm IN! Those pesky crows are very very clever, in reality. As is the AV. I have gotten to the point that I barely even hear that niggly voice telling me alcohol is good and fun. But every once in a while, it tries a new tactic to get me to let my guard down. Lately it's been like this: "So much stress in your life these days - wouldn't a drink help you get some rest at night?" It's not trying to tell me alcohol is fun, because it knows that tactic simply won't work on me. It's trying to tell me alcohol is more or less medicinal. I have been sleeping poorly, and it's true that drinking used to knock me out, but I KNOW it's not good sleep, and that it's actually much better for me to get a little less sleep than it is to "medicate" with booze. You can't trick me, clever crow!

This weekend I am hosting a very small "100 Birthday" party for my mom and my daughter. My daughter turned 20 this month, and my mom turned 80. Adds up to 100 - get it? Just immediate family, all vaccinated. I hope for the best, since the 20 y.o. daughter is moving on the 29th, and has to fly. We don't need Covid right now!

Other than that, still just getting the daughter ready to move. She's dragging her feet, as usual. It's all going to get done, and what doesn't, I can ship to her. I have to let go of the idea that this move will be perfectly executed. She can only take 3 suitcases, and the rest will be shipped. She can't take much. She's moving in with two other people in a one-bedroom apartment. It's all going to be fine... (that's my mantra these days).

Day 68, Good Morning from rainy Seattle!

Alysheba 01-20-2022 07:53 AM

Thank you, Mags! So grateful for you!

Kaily 01-20-2022 08:02 AM

I hope the party goes well Marty. The move sounds exciting for your daughter but worrying for you. It is hard when they grow up.

My eye has got worse. I took a antihistamine, it helped for a little while. The redness has spread down my face, it is very hot. I went and asked the Pharmacist, she said it looks like a bite. She told me to take another antihistamine tonight and if it is not better in the morning see my GP.

least 01-20-2022 08:09 AM

Count me in for another sober weekend. :)

Mags1 01-20-2022 08:56 AM

Kaily, I hope the antihistamines help but yes, speak to your doc if no better.

Marty, sounds a fun 100 party. There’ll be a few generations of family together. Enjoy yourselves. Hope your daughter gets moved ok. “It’s all going to be fine”…is a good mantra.

MLD51 01-20-2022 09:03 AM

4 generations together. We don't think about it all that much, but it is nice to still have 4 generations. My grandmother lived for about 7 months after my granddaughter was born so we do have a few pictures of 5 generations. She was 98 when she passed.

least 01-20-2022 09:07 AM

Billie tore up the corner of my mattress last night. There was stuffing all over when I woke up! :yikes: Also she refused her breakfast, don't know why. :dunno:

Still waiting for my new keyboard to be delivered. Can't wait to ditch this old sticky one for a new one. :)

Marty, that gathering sounds like fun. :)

Caramel 01-20-2022 09:50 AM

^ Billie may have eaten mattress-stuffing.

least 01-20-2022 09:57 AM

^^^ Yes, I thought of that. She hasn't vomited tho. Will be watching her carefully.

PhoenixJ 01-20-2022 10:13 AM

thanks mags

Mags1 01-20-2022 10:27 AM

Least, I hope Billie is ok.

Marty 4 and 5 generations together is wonderful.

Joining another sober Weekender.

Thanks for another fine OP Mags, I didn't know that about Crows and Eagles. You have to admire the crow's bravado in tackling something the size of an Eagle.

I do know about the AV though. We all know it is the beast that can never be killed but it can be starved into impotence. Even at times of stress I no longer consider running for the bottle.

Thanks for the video Cityboy - that was actually from the 1970s - I remembered it but have not seen it since then.

least 01-20-2022 11:28 AM

Got my new keyboard! :) It was cold so I'm letting warm up before I plug it in. I was waiting on my porch and saw the Amazon driver next door. I hollered, Hey Amazon! He rolled down the window and I said that's my pkg! He said, yes, the delivery instructions say a white house and this house is yellow. So he came over and delivered it to me. :) I gave him a really good compliment on the "delivered" email I got. :)

Willow00 01-20-2022 01:18 PM

Thanks for a great opening post Mags! Really good to read :)
I’m in for a sober weekend that’s for sure. I don’t feel like I’ll be soaring like an eagle, but I will aspire to it! And I’ll definitely be keeping myself as aloof from the AV as possible. I’m going to try and get some exercise in, although is oppressively hot and humid at the moment 🥵

Great song Cityboy, maybe I will fly like an eagle after all… or perhaps a seagull at least :) I might go and see if I can spot Jonathan down at the beach this weekend :)

Hugs ((((PJ)))) I hope you’re feeling less dragged down by upsetting memories soon. The past can weigh very heavily on us, especially at particular times of the year that are significant anniversaries

Kaily I hope your eye settles down quickly! Sounds painful :(

Least I hope Billie didn’t eat any mattress stuffing, you might need a trip to the vet if she’s not feeling better soon.

Marty the party sounds great! How lovely to have 4 generations of family, and so beautiful that you have some time with 5! ❤️

Have a good sober weekend everyone :)

Free2bme888 01-20-2022 01:37 PM

Cool about the eagles, Mags!

Kaily, are you allergic to sulfa? There’s a lot of sulfa in makeup. I hope the antihistamines are working. Check those ingredients…….

Cityboy, glad you figured out the you tube upload……yep, that’s my music-70s rock!

Glad you got the keyboard, least, and yep, I had a dog like that 🤬🤬🤬, costly in furnishings and vet bills. I agree with caramel, prob ate the stuffing.
