What you describe sounds like untreated alcoholism as described in the book Alcoholics Anonymous: “restless, irritable, and discontented” without the release from yourself that alcohol temporarily brings. I recommend reading the book and checking out virtual meetings or face-2-face if available. Like you say it’s very easy to romanticise alcohol but ultimately they are all just excuses to justify a drink.
