Champagne new years eve

Today is day 13 alcohol free. I will be spending new years eve at a hotel with my family. What are your thoughts on me having one glass of champagne at midnight? Not even a entire glass but just a few sips?

Jim1958 12-23-2018 03:27 PM

Don't do it

Endless posts here about taking a drink and the next thing you know the intake is right back where it was. Drink anything else, you can toast the new year with anything. Maybe some people can moderate but I can't. And I sure don't want to go back to day one. I am sure everyone can chime in on their experiences. Maybe you can take a few sips but why risk it? Better to err on the safe side.

My thoughts? That even considering it is the definition of the insanity of alcoholism.

Hope you reconsider.

You already know what we are going to say...Don't do it!

Why would you even want to??

MantaLady 12-23-2018 03:37 PM

My AV would be rubbing it’s grubby little hands together and bench pressing for the big fight. It probably would let me have just a few sips and stop. But then it would spend a few weeks telling me I am not an alcoholic and I am not that bad, that I can moderate as I just proved it to myself. Eventually I would try and “moderate” again and it would all turn to sh$t pretty quick. Don’t do it, that’s my advice x

No way! :dee You'd have to start over again and that 'one glass' would likely lead you to places you don't want to go. Don't do it. :(

Guener 12-23-2018 03:48 PM

The point of a toast is an affirmation, so why not use something else to drink and to start a celebration of a New Year, alcohol-free?

Anna 12-23-2018 04:05 PM

You would be going back to Day 1 again.

MissPerfumado 12-23-2018 04:20 PM

If you are serious about sobriety, at Day 13, you should be checking your sobriety plan to make sure you don't lapse over the holiday season.

What you are doing seems to be the very opposite.

I got sober same time of the year. It was not easy and I had to be very diligent. But then looking back I worked on sobriety like it was the most important thing I had ever done.

It was.

Opivotal 12-23-2018 04:22 PM

When I was on day 13, I didn't trust myself to drive past a liquor store let alone be around alcohol.

I don't think you really need anyone to tell you not to drink, you know the answer.

Sounds to me like you're setting yourself up for a relapse.

I promise you, you will never be happy you drank.

Please, think this through, Toni.

What are your thoughts on me having one glass of champagne at midnight? Not even a entire glass but just a few sips?
what would you say to someone else here who asked that Toni?

I believe that one drink can take me back int the madness.

It wouldn't be just a few sips or even one glass. that not how I drink and I don't think it's how you drink either.

You don't need to toast with champagne on NYE.

I'd drink anything and even I never did the champagne toast thing.
You don't need it,

Don't let your addiction convince you otherwise, Toni.

Play it out and think it through. If you had just a few sips or a small glass, what would be your AV's conclusion the next day?

Kdon853 12-23-2018 06:26 PM

No

2ndhandrose 12-23-2018 07:10 PM

No.

For me, I would have to start my day count again.

For a few sips? For a few glasses? A few bottles? That is how it would play out for me.

Hope1989 12-23-2018 07:25 PM

Well, if the answer was "yes, you might be able to pull it off"... then there would absolutely no point of any one of us being here.

Also bear in mind, that everytime you fall back down, you fall harder. And God I know what I'm talking about.

I had that "one sangria" when I went out for dinner, sounds harmless right?.

I showed up two days later with an overdose of cocaine. Maybe you're not that bad yet. Well, I was not that bad either some years back :)!

It was just one sangría.

doesn’t matter what my thoughts are.
what matters are yours.
and from the very fact you are asking, sounds like you think that is an option for you.
and what Carl says.

lessgravity 12-23-2018 07:30 PM

I assume you knew what the reaction would be. Based on your past, like mine, I know you know what the result will be.

Delilah1 12-23-2018 08:11 PM

No, it is absolutely not worth it. There are several scenarios that sill happen. 1) You will have a few sips and regret being back to day one over a few sips, 2) You will think oh, what's one glass and finish what's left, 3) You will think p, well 8 already put myself back to day one, so I may as well keep drinking.

You've worked hard to get those 13 days, don't put yourself back to day one. Bring something else for toasting. Pelligrino, La Croix, Sparkling Cider....

fini 12-23-2018 09:01 PM

i don’t know if this is of any use to you, toni, but of course i do have thoughts on this and here they are:
you didn’t really expect anyone here to say yeah sure, sounds like a good idea and i’m sure that will be just fine. right?
a lot of folks here have written to you about the probable result of that drink you are considering .
my thought is that the fact that you are considering it is much more important than the actual potential drink and it’s consequence. not the fact that the thought of drinking has entered your head, but that your perception of yourself in relation to a future drink is such that you cannot tell if this is a good idea or not.
that, to me, is the really concerning part.
i don’t know you, and i don’t know your story.
you do.
what does your story tell you about you and drinking?

gettingsmarter 12-23-2018 09:20 PM
