Great pictures. One of my goals is to learn more about the heavens.

Leigh, you can pick up a starter telescope reasonably. Learning how, and why, to set it up teaches a lot. Then you can see most of the solar system and some other cool stuff.

I'm so attracted to this topic...

And that's how railguns are made!

Here are some storms on Jupiter:

Saturns North Pole storm system is hexagonal.

Oh that is truly amazing! I want to understand it but I'm going to accept it right now, on the general principle of acceptance over analysis. Plus I briefly looked into a scientific explanation, and not only did it not yield enlightenment, but like explanations for the evolution of the eye, it didn't really tell me what I wanted to know: what is the reason that so many chaotic forces combine to create something that functions with such tremendous beauty and power? Why not be messy and muddled? Wherefore the urge for order?

Enough. I'm often blown away by the fact that people negotiate sidewalk traffic.

I have been thinking about just that, trachs. I have been reading up about the Cassiopeia Constellation - fascinating to me.

SoberLeigh 06-23-2018 12:17 PM

Very cool stuff today. Thanks, all.

I know what you mean. I can spend hours looking at deep-space photos wondering whaaaaat?

As far as the Saturn pole: The #1 Rule of the universe is that Entropy Increases. So, how does increasing entropy, and chaotic weather systems(see all the little cyclones in that picture?) create massive order?

On Jupiter, they organize differently.

Which muse?

Gilmer 06-30-2018 10:29 AM

From what I see online, that’s a lot more realistic-looking than most muse statues. More modern. Most of the seated ones I saw were sitting straight with their legs shoulder distance apart, and well-draped.

trachemys 06-30-2018 11:18 AM

Calliope

Caramel 06-30-2018 11:29 AM

Terpsichore :)

Same here! The first thing that came to mind was Erato or Terpsichore but the legs in your photo are less draped.

I am stumped (not unusual for me!)

courage2 06-30-2018 12:18 PM

Caramel's got it -- Terpsichore's my fav on account of just liking the name.

The image is a detail of a French early 19th century statue in the Louvre, which in full has the tympanum (like a tambourine). She's got gams! I imagine no silly shepherdess dance, but one inherited by the likes of Ava Gardner --

trachemys 06-30-2018 12:41 PM

Like I like the name Calliope. If I ever have another cat, that may be it's name. Already had a Pixel.

SoberLeigh 06-30-2018 01:28 PM

Well done,Caramel.
