New Here. Hello

Hi. I have been reading this site and have learned a lot over the last week. Finally time to register and come out of the shadows.

I am thoroughly beaten down by the daily drinking and emotional wreckage alcohol has sown over the last 25 years. I have had a couple of 2 year periods of sobriety during that time; however, another bottom is here and time for a better plan.

I read a quote attributed to Winston Churchill once.... "I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me." Not true for me...alcohol has taken almost everything out of and FROM me, including my sense of self and identity as a person.

More to follow, but I wanted to introduce myself with this post. There is a lot of quality sobriety and support here from what I have read. I am glad to be here.

Hello & Welcome

AdelineRose 06-07-2016 01:09 PM

Welcome! I think you will find a lot of support and wisdom here, I know I have!

Have you thought about making a recovery plan to ensure that this time is different then past attempts at sobriety? If not, I have found that it has helped keep me on track and make this time different for me then the past, and I have almost made it to 11 months sober for the first time in my life. Having a plan, being honest with all family and close friends, and completely doing the opposite then I was previously doing with the help of an amazing doctor, psychiatrist, and substance abuse counselor has been the key to recovery for me.

Welcome! Keep posting and never give up on yourself! YOU ARE WORTH IT!

Hi Percyspriest, I am new here as well. Let's take it one day at a time and I'm sure we'll get there!

Welcome! I, too have a lot of drink time under my belt (35 yrs unfortunately) and also there were a couple of years that I did not drink(and didn't miss it). I guess I'm getting too old to drink that way and need to get on with my life.
I look forward to your posts. Come on over to the 24 hour thread: and commit to not drinking for 24 hours each day. It's helped me a lot to focus. Oh and there are cool peoples over there too :)

alcohol is a thief and it will rob anything and everything from you. Welcome to SR.

Happy to have you part of the family, Percyspriest.

I was exhausted from daily drinking too - I have no idea why I insisted on continuing for so long. I think I was trying to bring back the early days of drinking - before it took over my life - but there's no way to have a do-over. Alcoholism keeps relentlessly progressing until it controls our lives & destroys us. This won't happen to you. Glad you are here.

Welcome. Staying sober for a couple of years is great. I'm sure you learned much during those periods. What do you think happened?

rc4dt1 06-07-2016 07:43 PM

Welcome! Keep posting. Check in as often as you need and maybe a little more than that to start. People here care.

Best wishes to you :-)

Thanks for all of the warm welcomes. It truly means a lot.

Yes, I do need a plan. When I was sober for a couple of years, I was also "recovering."...meaning, I was working an active program (AA) as opposed to just not drinking. This time around for me, I think I finally get that this is not a "drinking" thing, but a thinking (spiritual) thing for me. If I could intellectualize not drinking, I wouldn't drink.

So, this time around, I know I need a structured plan that includes dealing with the underlying reasons I drink. At my age, I may not make it back again...I look forward to reading more on here and contributing. Day 2 and sitting at an airport....with a coffee!

:thanks
