Day 5: Freaking Out

What am I going to do this weekend? I need a plan! Help!!

secretchord 10-30-2015 10:37 AM

I haven't gone a Friday without wine in so long that I can't even remember. What the heck am I going to do when I get home?!

thomas11 10-30-2015 11:05 AM

Its a test and the only grades are pass/fail. I refer to it as breaking the cycle. And its hard, but achievable. BREAK THAT CYCLE. Try not to freak out, stay calm, even bored. Just don't drink no matter what. Tomorrow morning will be your reward. Wish you the best.

Ideas you could try.

A) Read a book
B) Watch a movie
C) Have dinner with a friend
D) Go to a AA meeting?
E) Call someone and talk
F) Hang out on SoberRecovery Forums/Chat Rooms

I know from experience that the early days (like day 5) are tough. But you CAN get through them.

Posting here is a good idea. What are YOUR thoughts on what you can do tonight?

The plan is yours, you need to keep adding to it.

You don't HAVE to drink tonight. Or tomorrow...OR the next day...Etc

SR has your back. Stick around here all night if you need to! :grouphug:

I'm going to have a mental breakdown. I just know it. I want to go out and sing tonight but I can't find a sober friend to go with me. :( Of course, none of my "other" friends want to not drink.

NOT DRINK.

It would help, maybe, to schedule out your entire weekend, hour by hour, if need be, to account for your time. Be too busy to drink. Stay distracted.

Second, make a plan for what to do when the obsession to drink strikes. Most urges don't last long. So you can walk around the block, wash a sink full of dishes, listen to your favorite song. And there is always SR.

Things not to do:
  • Have alcohol in the house
  • Go anywhere where there is alcohol; no Halloween parties
  • Drink...

Tonight I really want to sing. So I might go out to the bowling alley and sing some karaoke maybe by myself because I apparently have no sober friends.

Tomorrow is Halloween. I will carve the pumpkin with my son, clean the house, do laundry, read, and then take him trick or treating. After that I'll probably hang out in the chatroom here.

Sunday is going to be a killer. I plan on going to church. I haven't been there in awhile and I'm sure it would probably do me some good. Then maybe go shopping for a new purse. Then come here.

I have alcohol in the house. I have a nice stock of liquor (which I don't usually drink) and about 4-5 bottles of cab, pinot gri, Riesling, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Come up with a list of other things to do like watch a movie, call a friend, go on here, play with legos.

I spent the first few months surrounding myself with people I knew would not be triggers for me as well.

I recently asked a friend of mine to go out singing with me sober. I've always been there for her in the past with her many issues and so I thought she'd be there for me just this once tonight. Well, her answer was a candid "HELL NO." She's "had a week" and plans on drinking heavily tonight. WTF!?!

It's another step towards you not drinking tonight. It takes away the temptation. I would get rid of it...

For tonight draw up an IRON clad plan to NOT drink tonight. Just for tonight. If you're willing to share about it, i'd love to hear it! :)

All the best.

Wine is expensive.

I'm in such a mind trap. Ugh.

Findingtheway 10-30-2015 11:41 AM

I can relate. But at the end of my drinking it caused me NOTHING but pain and misery.

Expensive or not...I had no use for Alcohol anymore.

Again, you have our (MY) support. And i hope you have a wonderful (Alcohol Free) weekend.

We're here if you need us. :)

Do what ever it takes to keep busy. Clean the house from top to toe, do some gardening or paint a room. Do absolutely anything to keep your self busy.

The wish of many an alcoholic. But until we (those seeking recovery) get past that hurdle, sobriety remains elusive.

I know you can't get your mind around never drinking. But if you think that one day that you can drink...then one day you will. Hope for your sake that one day isn't today.

I've been where you are at so I know this hesitation you have. But this question is for yourself, hopefully to get you thinking a bit more in depth. So here goes....If you want to stop drinking then why do you want to drink in the future?
