New to the site

Hi,

I found this site on an internet search. I have a big problem with drinking. For the last 3-4 years I have drunk sometimes up to 5 days a week, large quantities of lager and I have decided to quit tomorrow. I drink at home, usually on my own and usually just sit watching tv, playing ps4 or playing around on my phone.

The last part is a real problem as when I have access to my phone and have been drinking, I tend to google stuff around illness, death, dying, basically all negative stuff and I have a lot of negative thoughts day to day anyway which tend to be worse due to usually being hung over

Just thought I'd come on here and seek some support, good way to chart progress too

Hi everybody!

Glad to have you here, you'll find a lot of support.
At the end of my drinking days I drank at home alone, too. No one to answer to, no one to see how much I drank and no one there to see the pitiful mess I was the next day.
It wasn't much of an existence. And that's all I was doing- existing.
Having some sober time behind me now, I've found a whole new world. Sober.
I wish the same for you, and best to you.

Welcome Stewy, this sounds like a great decision. Once you get all that alcohol out of your system I dare say you will start to feel better and a lot of those morbid thoughts will start to lift. Why not give it a go today? I know it is scary, and yes, easier said than done (I'm living proof of that!) but it is a simple as not picking up the first drink. Instead of drinking tonight you could pour all your lager out. Sort of a symbolic goodbye. We'll be here to support you through it. You could check in here instead of googling upsetting stuff.
In any case, we'll also be here if you decide not to do that and want to join us tomorrow. The decision is yours, the sooner you do it, the sooner you are on your way to feeling better. Best of luck, happy to have you here.

Stewy84, congrats on your decision. I was the same way as you and Ghostlight1 - drinking at home by myself day after day.

Alcohol was the only thing I cared about. Sure, I could meet up with friends and go to dinner, to a bar - but ultimately I did not really care about spending time with anyone. I only went to social events to drink - and of course I wouldn't even go if I knew I could not drink. Even if I went out, I did not care to socialize. I wouldn't be enjoying the dinner or friends' company, and I wasn't able to drink one or two glasses of wine to "enjoy" whatever I was doing. I only cared to get drunk as fast as humanly possible and that's it. So towards the end it didn't make sense to go out anymore. I could just drink at home alone and I wouldn't have to deal with others noticing how much I drank or having to keep up a straight face in front of others. We all know that all we need to do is not pick up that first drink - simple to say but not easy at all to do. But you can do it...we are all right here with you!

Hi and welcome! Alcohol can really screw with your head. I don't know if you suffer from depression but mine is worse when drinking and also the negative thoughts. You are in the right place - everyone here is so supportive :)
