Ok folks here is the recipe For the world famous chips: maris piper potatoes peeled and cut then rinse the starch off in a bowl of water maybe 3 times then dry the chips good with kitchen paper DRYING THEM PROPERLY IS VITAL Put a pan of sunflower/vegetable oil on for around 7 mins then fry the chips till you know they are ready (they will start to float this is a indicator they are almost done) Then serve (salt, pepper, onion vinegar, ketchup, etc) For the battered cod !! You will need Cod fillets (2) 110 grams of self raising flour 1/2 teaspoon of salt 150 ml water Sift the flour and salt into a mixing bowl gradually add the water while whisking it in until the batter is smooth and free from lumps Dip your fillets in the batter coating it well (I use a separate frying pan enough to shallow fry the fish fillets) Heat up your pan with enough oil to shallow fry After 5 mins of letting the oil heat up lay the fillets in and be warned the fish cooks quite quick so keep an eye to make sure you turn the fish when you got the batter your type of golden Once you have cooked both sides take the fillets out and put on plate with your chips No newspaper required that's what they did back before my day lol This bit is for lionhearted As he lives in london Maris piper from sainsburys lionhearted cost £2 the cod fillets you can get 4-5 frozen from Iceland (you defrost them the night before) they cost £4 For my international friends if you can't get maris piper there is also cypress potatoes for English chips |
Definitely not something to worry about!! The amount of calories I consumed in alcohol means I'm guilt free when it comes to triple choc muffins now and again!! :) |
alright, I had to post, I keep seeing this fish and chips thing and I can see it and smell it and taste it. It's starting to drive me nuts. with tarter sauce on the side and cole slaw. I'm sticking with the salad tonight though. But I do have some cod - maybe this weekend splurge. |
I have a chippie just round the corner. I might stick to that I think LOL D |
Lbrain you made me chuckle Dee its unbelievably easy and the only problem I have with chippies is the price and the fact they use other fish and pass it off as cod I'm not saying all chippies are like that tho if you have a good chip shop who take pride in what they do and you have to wait to get served you know your on to a winner Each to their own but when you make your own in nice clean oil etc it's beyond delicious its ridiculously good I will always go if it is a good fish and chip shop Onion vinegar on the chips pls lol |

sorry for the mini hijack LH :) D |
I didn't read the thread when I posted - just the title. :) But now I see SW's recipe for fish n chips. My take is this - I leave the the flour mix dry, I dredge the fillet then dip it in egg, then in the flour mix and into the pan. A little different but it fries up nice and crispy. Yeah, the frozen icelandic fish is easy to use because of the uniform shape it is frozen in. Haddock is good that way too! |
I just had this conversation with my husband last night. I need to lose some weight. After supper last night, I said to him, I feel like making chocolate chip cookies but I don't need the calories. He and I ended up laughing while adding up all the calories I used to drink. I only ended up eating 3 cookies but what the heck, I would rather be fat and happy then drunk and miserable! |
well done Lion heart. |
