Cool thread! On the Pink Floyd theme, here's a fairly recent and stunning work by David Gilmour -- his super cool friends (one recovered) join him on the backups, too. You'll recognize them :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2H65mHd9Vk |
And, on a country theme, here's "Bottle by my Bed" by Jason Boland and the Stragglers...a beautiful song about coming out of the pain of alcohol addiction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwGTabv-zxE |

ooohhh, love this song, but I am pretty partial to Jeff Buckley's version, have you heard it? Oh my gosh that "Alibi" song and video is powerful indeed. Aside from the Cohen tune (in a wide variety of version's)...probably my favorite "recovery tune" is this Paulo Nutini song. It's actually about kicking his marijuana addiction (as that's what the bunny represents)..but I think that scary a*ss bunny could represent any substance addiction..or perhaps addiction. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIQ2Rxh1k9Y |

Music is my passion, I love almost all genres. Well except for Jazz, couldn't ever really get into jazz. What songs have had meaning to you in your recovery- both high and low spots? I'll start with a song I heard today that immediately made me think of all my new sober friends here. I think the lyrics ring true about the sadness and weakness but we are all here, people helping people. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmLNs6zQIHo Sent from my iPhone using SoberRecovery |

This is a powerful song and even more powerful video. It is difficult for me not to cry watching it. ***Warning, for those who might be triggered, the video has several short clips of drug and alcohol abuse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aM8saMdA04 Sent from my iPhone using SoberRecovery |

Wow! That was so powerful and sad. Sad because we are all born perfect people and then someone screws us up. (At least that's my story). My abusers changed the person I could have been. :-( Sent from my iPhone using SoberRecovery |
Love this! I tend to like a lot of doom and black metal, though I listen to a little of everything. When I first started to realize I had a real problem with drinking two and a half years ago, I discovered Chelsea Wolfe. Her dark and sorrowful approach to electronica and folk (just trust me) really hit home and I spent many a night crying for many things: love, respect, my childhood, comfort, and a reprieve from an illness I thought was going to kill me. All of her songs are hauntingly beautiful, but I've found her acoustic album especially powerful. Here's a track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgWb1d001FI#t=36 Whoo! Made me tear up all over again. In a good way this time :) |
My abusers changed the person I could have been. :-( I gave up, really, for all intents and purposes. Onl;y one little spark of the true me remains flickering but still alight. When I got sober I took the real me back out of storage, and fanned heck out of that flame :) you can do that too Serenidad :) D |

Here is a good soulful song I have been hooked on the last few weeks!! LADY - KARMA ( TRUTH & SOUL RECORDS ) - YouTube |
I've always liked this song, but I think it has a little more meaning these past few months. I also love anything by The Cure, The Smiths, and Depeche Mode. Fun thread! Blind Melon - Change - YouTube |
This song is clearly about someone fighting alcoholism- IMHO. I like ti because the tone is dark and the words a warning as to several of the many things that can go wrong. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnmD_2rNJY8 |
And THIS. I am sure most of you know this song, it is so perfect for us fighting our painful addictions. And of course any Six Feet Under fans out there will get a pang of longing for that amazing show when they hear this again, what a show that was! And what a song this is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1xllaQgtJI |

And lastly for this morning a positive song about changes. I'm pretty sure he is singing about love but I like to think of it in terms of my recovery and the positive changes I am making in my life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHmlMwUWTg4 |

Hey, get rhythm when you get the blues Hey, get rhythm when you get the blues Yes a jumpy rhythm makes you feel so fine It'll shake all the trouble from your worried mind Get rhythm when you get the blues Little shoeshine boy never gets low down But he's got the dirtiest job in town Bendin' low at the peoples' feet On a windy corner of a dirty street Well, I asked him while he shined my shoes How'd he keep from gettin' those mean old blues? He grinned as he raised his little head Popped a shoeshine rag and then he said "Get rhythm when you get the blues Hey, get rhythm when you get the blues It only costs a dime, just a nickel a shoe Does a million dollars worth of good for you Get rhythm when you get the blues Hey, get rhythm when you get the blues Hey, get rhythm when you get the blues Yes a jumpy rhythm makes you feel so fine It'll shake all the trouble from your worried mind Get rhythm when you get the blues" Well, I sat down to listen to the shoeshine boy And I thought I was gonna jump for joy Slapped on the shoe polish left and right He took a shoeshine rag and he held it tight He stopped once to wipe the sweat away I said you're a mighty little boy to be workin' that way He said "I like it" with a big wide grin He kept on a poppin' and he said again "Get rhythm when you get the blues Hey, get rhythm when you get the blues Get a rock 'n' roll feelin' in your bones Get taps on your toes and get gone Get rhythm when you get the blues" Good ol johnny cash |
GREAT thread. I must contribute! The first time I heard this song I was driving. I'm always driving, it seems. Anyway, I listened carefully to the words, for I love Brandi Carlisle, and I was in tears by the end of the first chorus. By the second I was pulled over on the side of the road, bawling. I was a frightened, sad, hopeless active drinker and this song became my impetus to do something about it. It took about a year. But I played it a lot, and I cried every time. I don't cry anymore. I sing it, and I sing it loud. Especially the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNmo8I4dEQE |
