Hi there, finally decided to give it up and join a forum like this for support. Im 41 and Ive been abusing alcohol since I was 16. Im not a daily drinker but I drink at least once per week and when I do I drink way too much, usually between 15-20 pints of beer, sometimes even more. Im tired of the hangovers and wasted days recovering and the health risks, expenses etc..etc..... I waste $200 per month sometimes even more just to get drunk/hungover. Im tired of it !!! I've tried to just have a few drinks before but it never seems to work. I also can leave 2 or 3 beer in my fridge for a week and I wont touch them until I buy another dozen or more to go with it so I can get drunk. Time for this to stop ! Thanks for letting me vent lol !

Welcome

This for me has been a good place to start

LoftyIdeals 01-01-2012 06:46 AM

Welcome, Mark. I think you'll find you've come to the right place to help you achieve your goal. Congrats on your decision.

TheTinMan 01-01-2012 06:48 AM

Welcome Mark!

tanja 01-01-2012 06:55 AM

Welcome to SR! Your drinking pattern sounds just like mine. Taking it one day at a time and visiting this web site has helped me achieve 38 days of sobriety. Thinking it through and keeping the memories of the horrible hangovers fresh in my mind has been instrumental in my wanting to change. You can do it! Welcome aboard:)

Glad you are here! Happy New Year!

Chuck48 01-01-2012 08:10 AM

Welcome, Mark. You're in great company here. Although I'm not a frequent poster, I have learned so much from reading the posts in these forums.

Just think--if you stop drinking today, you'll have an additional $2,400 in the bank by this time next year. Plus you'll be in better health and probably have a lot more positive memories. These benefits are what I try to keep in mind when I think about having "just one drink."

(((Mark))) - Welcome to SR!!

Hugs and prayers,

Amy

Welcome Mark!

I think you'll find a lot of company here - I don't ever remember having a drink or two and thinking "maybe I'll have a Coke now." It was always "just one more."

Glad you're here - keep reading and posting!

Welcome to SR Mark :)

You certainly came to the right place. I got sober with the help of the folks here on SR. If you keep drinking as you now realize, it will only get worse. So what is your recovery plan?

Hevyn 01-01-2012 01:50 PM

Hi Mark! SR helped me stop a life long drinking habit and get my life back. I know it will help you, too. We're so glad to have you with us.

CaiHong 01-01-2012 03:11 PM

Welcome Mark,

I have never added up the cost of my alcohol but the stupid things I did and wrong decisions I made were incalcuable.

I really value waking up sober and being able to plan my day and know pretty much it will go as planned sans booze.

We are all here to support each other and help each other to stay sober. I visit here at least once a day it grounds me and I believe that everyone who posts is helping someone esle whether they are aware of it or not.

All the best
CaiHong

Hi Mark, I am the same, I would never just have one or two drinks if I knew I couldn't follow them up with a lot more...

Do you have a plan for the money you will save by not drinking - maybe a one-off purchase or a holiday or something? I am certainly looking forward to saving a few quid I would otherwise spend - although to be honest that's the least of my motivations!

MadmanMark 01-04-2012 01:26 PM

Well Itchy, I dont really have a recovery plan. I think when I get the urge to drink in the evening Ill go buy a magazine or book to read and maybe something to cook etc....to keep me busy and Ill try to plan something fun/productive for the next morning/day that I wouldnt want to do with a hangover. Hey......I might be onto something here lol. Not sure yet what Ill do with the money I save.

FlyerFan 01-04-2012 02:36 PM

Welcome Mark, I am new here as well. The idea of keeping busy is a good one, it has been working for me so far. Do anything else except drink, keep your mind off of it.

Zebra1275 01-04-2012 02:36 PM

Alcoholism is progressive, stopping before it gets worse is wise.

MadmanMark 01-09-2012 09:31 AM

10 days so far !!!! Ive been working alot so I havent had much chance to think about it so its been easy so far.

FlyerFan 01-09-2012 04:24 PM

That's great, 11 days for me. Keep going strong!

needtostop1 01-09-2012 04:34 PM

LoftyIdeals 01-09-2012 04:37 PM

Great going, Mark, and all the others here. The first month is the hardest, but you are well on your way!

HenryKrinkle 01-09-2012 07:34 PM

My story is very similar to yours Mark. Congrats on your sobriety. Keep up the good work. I'm just finishing up day 9 myself.

Ilovemysonjj 01-09-2012 07:38 PM

Hello Mark, Great job!!!
I am in 9 days and counting. I found day 6 or 7 to be the hardest ones since that was Friday and Saturday which were my big days/nights .
Keep the faith everyone and God bless
TT

MadmanMark 05-01-2012 04:22 PM

Well here I go again. I wasnt too successful the past 4 months when I first joined/posted on here, didnt try very hard not to drink though so now Im starting all over again. Woke up today at around noon again with another hangover and $80 poorer......what a waste !!!! and now Im at work tonight doing a 12 hr night shift....and struggling to stay awake. I hope this is my last hangover ! Wish me luck, thanks

Dee74 05-01-2012 04:25 PM

welcome back Mark :)

I found making the decision to quit was great...but I really had to work at it after that too...I had to make a few changes to my life and make them stick.

I still check in here daily...others go to AA, or SMART, or counselling, or use AVRT...find whatever it is you need for support.

You can do this :)

Welcome back!

Trying to work with a hangover isn't fun....... soak up the support here and just keep going - better days are right around the corner!:c031:

nel68 05-01-2012 05:43 PM

Welcome Madman, this is great place for support and to occupy your time/mind so boredom does not take over when cravings set in to drink.... SR has helped me be 4 months sober:)

CaiHong 05-01-2012 06:08 PM

Hi Mark,
Glad you are back. Never give up. I am 11 months sober now and the changes in my life have been great, no all happy happy joy joy joy but lasting changes that have changed my perception of life forever.

It is worth the work and commitment that you need to get and stay sober. it may look bleak now but if you find and stick to a program I promise you things will only get better.

We are all here for each other.

love
CaiHong
