Ah, southern cooking
She crab soup and succotash
Succulent pulled pork

Everything fried down there
Even the corn on the cob
And okra of course

another load of
pea gravel on the driveway
spells a hot hard day

Cleaning house today
Somebody's got to do it
There's no magic here

dust bunnies sing from
corners and from under chairs
there is magic there

Dust bunnies sing of
Yesterday, of time passing
They know our secrets

That is why they hide
Under the bed, the sofa
Out of sight, or reach

Feeling safe until
Gilmer got the vacuum out
And sucked them all up

I just vacuumed dust
Cause my husband told me to
Never would have seen.

I am not the queen

I pile up my books.

Husbands have a knack
For seeing the obvious
Then delegating

wives have a talent
for dreaming up the absurd
then delegating

i can't remember
or count how many deaths i've
known from alcohol

learn from tragedy
so we can give it purpose
nothing is for naught

it could have been me
that guy who died of liver
failure yesterday

reduced to that guy
he had a name but i can't
say it here - not now

when i think about
drinking again i'll just read
obituaries

death is like a punch
in the gut when the belly's
full and the heart pressed

some people die with
their eyes open i've seen it
because mine were too

when does a life lose
its value or does even
the lowest have worth

the elephant strays
from the herd to die while the
drunk just plain damn strays

Some husbands are nags!
I don't earn the money, though.
