Healing with music

So, I've been finding a lot of healing in music lately. I've been really into Kat Dahlia. She was in a toxic relationship with an addict and several of her songs are about that experience. I saw her live and it was awesome! She spoke openly about her experience with codependency and loving someone toxic. She was so encouraging and positive and real. I had such a great time :) so much music is about the addicts experience, it's refreshing to hear music from the perspective of someone affected by the addict's behavior. I can relate ;) anyone have any suggestions for other artists that explore this topic? Here are some lyrics and links to some Kat Dahlia.

Devils Command
This video pretty much sums up the experience I had with my ex

Said he was fearless
Said he was brave

But he was too haunted, to ever be saved
But I faced you, by myself
Every night you, lost the fight to, the stash on your shelf
And you'd breathe, evil in and out
Slowly, awareness is fading out

Here comes his twisted smile, and that wicked raised eyebrow
Staring at me, Our legs are falling to the ground

And if I try to understand
All the workings of this man
I'd be losing every hand
He's at the devils command

Said I would leave him
But I would always stay
Didn't have the courage, to leave our love in disarray
So i'd face you, by myself. Every night you, lost the fight to, the stash on your shelf
And you'd breathe, evil in and out
Slowly, our love is fading out

The High
The conundrum of fearing and loving someone

You made your promises
I've held on believing in all of them
Love timeless ; that`s what you said
So why's, your past coming back for its revenge

My arms, yea they're reaching for stars
But they`re covered in scars
Oh baby you`re the bleeding of my heart
Yea your touch left a mark
I`m no light I`m no dark
Oh baby you`re the most important high

You left a stain
And now I wear it like I`m wearing my own name
Are we the same
You throw your spite, I`ll take a bite
So sublime

Do Better
And something's heard repeatedly "I will change"

He said, "That he's in great pain and he wants to know if you can help
him."
"Alright, would you tell him to just relax and I'll be back as soon as I can
With some medicine. "

If I tried to be blind,
Through the signs I'd decide.
You are real, you are mine,
But I ain't blind.
I'm ain't trying for you,
Baby I resign.
And I'm hearing all the chimes,
I'll follow til' I find.
And if I had a thousand lives,
I would leave you a thousand times.
And my mind goes through the lines,
And memories of your crimes.
I ain't trying for you,
Baby I resign.

And he says I know, I know, I know
I hurt you one before
But I can't do better
Please let me do better

I'm just not into songs that romanticize drinking, addiction, dysfunction, and abuse. BTDT. It ain't all that romantic.

I dont see the romanticizing. To me these songs are about an intense experience she had living through a toxic codependent relationship and then finally recognizing it and acknowledging it for what it was. I can relate to that experience. She, like me, ultimately realized it was toxic and she had to leave.

Well I was all about listening to the last Katy Perry album when RAH was away. "Roar" "Love Me" and "By the Grace of God" got me through some crappy days. And listening to old Tori Amos always makes me feel fierce :-)

Shutterbug, I'm with ya. Music is my therapy. I love artists that can put into words what I'm feeling or that I can relate to. I think it's a healthy outlet to listen to music even if it's dark or sad or about what we are going tthrough. There is a thread on here about songs for us in Alanon where people have posted songs that they related to in dealing with their addicts. I wish I knew how to post it for you. I enjoyed your post!

LexieCat....do you like "blues" music? Blues is all about pain....

I do get what you are saying....

I think...sometimes we want to relate...sometimes we need to validate....sometimes, we want to forget.....

Kat Dalia sure does know how to emote!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
