Im not in alanon just yet but I have a few that I have had on repeat for the last few weeks.

KT Tunstall - One Day - YouTube - One day

Lissie - Pursuit of Happiness - YouTube - Minus the part about smoking weed and drunk driving. The chorus of the song gives me a lot of inspiration

The Outsider lyrics - A Perfect Circle - Thirteen Step - YouTube - This is one of my favorites, it fits what I feel towards abf so well.

I listened to this song loads in the run up to leaving XABF. Loads of her songs have spoken to me through this whole process, I could fill the thread with them!

My ringtone for AH before he got sober was Seether's "Fine Again" (acoustic): Seether - "Fine Again" *Acoustic* (amazing version!!) (HQ) - YouTube.

Corinne Bailey Rae's "Put Your Records On" and Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry" remind me that it's ok to self-care:

I'm Alive - Jackson Browne

It's been a long time since I watched these lights alone
I look around my life tonight and you are gone
I might have done something to keep you if I'd known
How unhappy you had become

While I was dreaming of you
With my heart in your hands
And I was following though
With my beautiful plans

Yeah now I'm rolling down this canyon drive
With your laughter in my head
I'm gonna have to block it out somehow to survive
'cause those dreams are dead
And I'm alive

I want to go where I will never hear your name
I want to lose my sorrow and be free again
And I know I've been insane
When I think of places I could have been

But I was dreaming of you
With my heart in your hands
And I was following through
With my beautiful plans

Standing here by the highway side
Watching these trucks blow by
Inches from my face
Yeah thinking 'bout the time I've wasted
And the pleasure we once tasted
Looking up and down this road
I've been here before
Can't be here no more

Yeah now I'm rolling down California five
With your laughter in my head
I'm gonna have to block it out somehow to survive
'cause those dreams are dead
And I'm alive

I am a huge fan of Anna Nalick's "Breathe". I have used a quote from this song as part of my signature for awhile now.

My current favorite recovery song is Sara Bareilles' "Brave".

Great lyrics in this song ...
Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is

I became a fan of Sara Bareilles a couple of year ago when I heard her song "King of Anything".

I grew up in a family full of codependents. Everyone was always telling each other what they should do and how they should feel. "King of Anything" sort of became my independence song.

Thanks for starting this thread.

I love this thread. It made me realize I've been listening to some dark codie stuff this summer (e.g. Lumineers, Dead Sea - codie, The National, Graceless - dark). I'll try to listen to some of your recs.

Just heard this one in the truck. "Love Just Ain't Enough"

Here's a game for you. Take your favourite love song that makes you think of your A and listen to it as if you are singing it to them. Listen to it again, this time singing it as a love song to yourself. Its weird at first, but its helpful to try to realise you need to be able to give all those things to yourself before you can expect someone else to. Lots of us find it easy to love someone else and not so easy to love ourselves. Its been a real eye opener for me.

There was this one song that I had picked out for XABF and I's wedding. It was a song we both loved and I sang it so many times, many times in tears, tears of hope, tears of despair, tears of love, all different tears. Then one day I read that all the things we were looking for from other people were things that we were missing, that we needed to learn to give ourselves. So I tried singing the song with me in mind instead of him and it was a real revelation of all the holes in me, all the things I need to work on and how much I've been neglecting myself, then it was an act of love to tell myself I deserved all those things too. Humour me, try it :)

Traveling Woman by Bat For Lashes:

Hang on, traveling woman
Don't sacrifice your plan
'Cause it will come back to you
Before you lose it on the man

Never fall in love with potential
'Cause you can't see with your own eyes
All the pretty faces and sorry words
Can take away your pride

Got to listen to the vision
Some may say a dream
Words from the unseen

They can make you tired
Tell you lies, make you fall
Make you tired
Tell you lies, make you fall
Make you tired
Tell you lies, make you fall

Hang on, traveling woman
Don't sacrifice your plan
'Cause it will come back to you
Before you lose it on the man

Got to listen to the vision
Play in the ashes of what you once were
Got to listen to the vision
Play in the ashes of what you once were

Adele - Set fire to the rain - YouTube

Often as children of alcoholics or abusers we grow up so desperate for love. That when we find even a small bit of it from a person who doesn't even know how to give it or love themselves correctly. we cling to it even love from a sick person. We think we owe them the world and we can begin doing what they cant do for themself. We begin waging wars for them. Much like Trying to cure and control their problems or addiction. We didn't cause it so we can never control or cure it. But we think we can do the impossible and set fire to the rain with the love we have for them. Love we don't even have for ourselves. But I have learned in the the program of al anon all the love in the world won't make someone well untill they love themself first. We are deceiving ourselves and actually become proud about that job like we our loving them back But we are not we our cheating then and ourselves from true healing. They have to fight the rain and hurt inside their heart with the love of their hp. So do we. But this deception believing we can do for them what we cant do for ourselves love ourselves brings us a false self esteem. The rain is so we will step away and detach from them and let them stop the rain in there own life. When the flood comes that trys to destroy them God wants them alone so He can deal with them. We can't be God to anybody. times I have also realized the rain is a good thing and is needed because it causes whatever it is raining on to grow. Eventually through growth they won't need the rain as much. But we are not here to control or intere in that process God has for them. Or we could be the very thing that keeps them in the rain. Sometimes the know this before we do and they run. not because they dont love us but because they are trying to deal with it without us overwhelming them. A scan cant heal if someone keeps picking at it. All the love cant put out rain remember that for your own sanity So you don't end up as sick as them. None of us can do the impossible and heal a heart. if we try we can end up Addicted to THEM the same way they are addicted to their pain substance and or bad behaviors. We cheat them and ourselves if we do this. When it starts raining and it will seek shelter in your higher power you are not their shelter. If you try to be you are robbing them of their hp. Don't spend your life returning a favor that you can't.
