Ca stop drinking
 

I'm 37 and can't get sober. Been drinking for years. They are telling me to taper but it's impossible. I don't have the money for rehab and people in my life think i can quit cold turkey. They just don't understand this illness.

Welcome to SR sunnys. Most people don't understand what you are going through, but here you will find many that do. Tapering is very difficult, if not impossible for many alcoholics. There are free or reduced cost detox/rehabs in many places, if you have a local AA chapter they could help you find them. There is a better way....hope we can help you find it.

AA is free. Why not give it a try?

I went to a no-cost detox program and stayed a week. It wasn't plush, but I am still sober three years later.

Welcome to the family. It is possible to get sober and live a better life, but it's hard at first. Getting thru detox can be difficult. The first step is to stop drinking. One day at a time you can do this. :hug:

Always worked best for me when I made a firm decision and just stopped drinking.

Even when I went to a 28 days rehab once they really didn't give me much medication for relief. It was very close to cold turkey.

I drank for 40 years. When the consequences got bad (real bad) I ended up in rehab. I didn't drink after rehab ... for about 6 weeks ... then the 'controlled drinking' started ... and that extended period of STRUGGLING was living hell ... which ended up with me in an even worse condition inside ...

That started my commitment to WORK the 12 Steps of AA, with the help of a Sponsor, and I am now 2 years Sober. And ... more important ... Alcohol has NO importance in my life anymore.

I also went to a no-cost detox program. I followed that up with a relatively low-cost inpatient treatment program. Sober 3.5 years later also.

To the OP: man, you sound hopeless and defeated. We know that feeling because we've been there. But there is hope! You just have to take action. Nobody gets sober just waiting for others to help them....in the end, you've got to help yourself. Imagine if a loved one was suffering - you'd call a health clinic, see what the options were, etc. Do that for YOURSELF. Most of us did and we were able to climb out of the hole. We are here to support and encourage you. You can do it man!

You can indeed quit cold turkey, most people do since tapering is almost impossible for an addict (if you can control that, you could have controlled your drinking and not become an addict, right? ;)). You may or may not need a medical "detox", depends how much you drink and you didn't say. Have you tried to quit before? If so, what happened?

I'm thinking of buying benzodiazepine online and stopping this way. My ex girlfriend did.

I am sure I am not the only member who will say, please do not buy medication online. If it is not prescribed by a doctor it is not safe and you do not know really what you would be getting.

You could indeed become addicted to benzos, trading one addiction for another- and perhaps even mixing them with alcohol, which can be fatal. Please do not take any medication without a prescription from your doctor.

Calling AA or another local hotline can get you started with the help you need to stop drinking today.

Please see a medical professional, go to ER or A&E if you can't stop or feel unwell.

I am with Dharma33. Buying Benzos online is a very bad idea.
I quit cold turkey but I was very lightweight quantity wise. For me it was more how it affected me mentally.
If you are physically addicted to alcohol, it might be a good idea like others on this thread have mentioned to look into going to a cheap detox.
Since you mention tapering, I guess you are in the UK. I think there is a program there which could assist you if you don't have any money. I know that Dee and Soberwolf have posted the links before. Shoot Wolfie a pm, he is in the UK and might have the link to that program handy for you.

Salvation Army has rehabs, call them!

Lots of good advice here sunny. Please call your local AA hotline or other crisis hotline. Buying benzos over the Internet is not safe for many reasons already explained here and also potentially illegal depending on where you live.

Well looks as though it'll be cold turkey. I can't afford rehab and will be detoxifying at my ex girlfriends flat.

If you are in the UK call the Samaritans hotline. They can help. You don't have to do this alone and there are several free options you can seek already mentioned here.

There not open today and tomorrow is bank holiday. Just rang them and answering machine came on. Only open Monday to Friday. I'll give the samaritans a call.

Samaritans are useless, I'm not suicidal was just asking for a refferal to a no or low cost detox. They couldn't help.

You've been on sr for 24 hours. Are you detoxing? Drinking? How's it going? Yes, alcohol impairs your health and messes with your attitude, but you can get your life back! Your life is not wasted. You have many more years to live and laugh and love. I hope you share some of your sober journey here. I know it seems impossible now, but you really can do this!

Had a professional detox in 2007, 2009, and 2011. They've given up on me and telling me to taper down. Impossible.

Btw i finally did quit drinking, but tapering was beyond my capability.

I am alone too. And old. And you can get sober. The alternative is just too awful over time. Your life is important!

My girlfriend or should I say quit many times with benzos and without but she doesn't live in a ******** and has a kid to look after.

She can quit ct and doesn't crave it.

Her place isn't a tip.
