Any younger people go to AA?

Was just curious, as this week I want to start attending meetings (instead of picking up that drink after work, I've decided to replace it with AA!). But I'm scared. I'm in my 20's, and I don't really know what goes on.

I got sober in AA at the age of 17. That was a long time ago. Call your local AA group and just get to a meeting.

My son is a recovering alcoholic and is in AA. Go to a meeting. If there are mostly older people at the one you go to, ask one of them if there is a young people's meeting in your area. They can probably guide you to one. Also, go to the AA website for you area and see if one is designated for young people. We have some in our area that are. Many times they're on Friday or Saturday nights late in the evening. My son attends all different types of the meetings and loves them. He's met a whole group of college aged friends. He also enjoys going to the meetings with the old timers because they have so much wisdom. I wish you the best.

Thank you all. I guess a big part of me is scared, going in there alone, not knowing anybody.... not knowing what to expect.... I'm an anxious person :p

Yes, I'm 22 years old. I'll have one year clean and sober on September 2nd. I spent a couple years going in and out of AA before I was truly ready to surrender.

I'm in my 20s and have just started attending AA. I was nervous too and it took a little while for that feeling to subside. Don't get discouraged if you feels those nerves for the first few weeks. I'm in week 6 and am starting to feel much more comfortable.

Just want to add - you can call your local intergroup number (google your town and state and AA) and see if they can give you information on a young persons group or even arrange for someone to meet you at a meeting. Good luck :)

smalltowngirl 07-23-2013 03:26 PM

I did find a local number where they can put you in touch with someone. Thinking of just taking a breath and doing that tonight.

Was pretty much borderline there. That was one of my wake up calls.

Don't take anywhere near as long as I did to smarten up!:thanks

I got sober when I was 22. There were a lot less young people then as now. Try some different meetings. Give time, time.

We get a lot of young folks at the meetings I go to. It is amazing how much we all have in common. Last Thursday nite a 20 yo young woman celebrated her first year and had a lot of great stuff to share.
